I am not sure what you mean, i doubt it would matter what the first card used to test Doom 3 was. I am sure several cards would have been used and different review sites would have used different cards.

Whatever the best card is to run Doom 3 would be the best card to run other games, it doesn't make sense really. Any decent card will run Doom 3 just as well as it would run other games. I am sure something like a 7900GT or 7950GT and for ATi a X1950XT or X1800XT would run Doom 3 at high resolutions with the highest settings and decent framerates (about 60 FPS).

Of course anything in the 8800 series would play doom at the highest settings no problem, and cards like the 7900GTX, 7950GX2, X1900XTX, X1950XTX would also run Doom 3 very well.

All of the above would play Doom with Ultra high settings with x4 Anti Aliasing, full Anisotropic Filtering and very high resolutions, maybe 1600 x 1200.

For lower resolutions such as 1024 x 768 with no Anti Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering but still using high settings then cards like the 7600GT or the X1600XT would probably perform reasonably well.

I mean that what is the lowest card that can run D3 with all graphics on without AA and Anis. All cards above will with no doubt run D3 with EVERYthing, that's for sure even for me

Have a look at VGA Charts 2007, i have already selected Doom 3 at 1024 x 768 resolution with no Anti Aliasing and no Anisotropic Filtering but with Ultra Quality.

These cards all recent ones, not earlier than ATi's X800 series and NVIDIA 6 series.

Actually the resolution should be 1280x1024 because it provides the only good and therefore best graphics before 1600x1200

    At 1600x1200, 8AF, I could run it on my 6800GT@Ultra (bios-mod).

    This is a strange thread.

First of all, buying a video card based solely on how well it preforms at one single game is wrong, there are alot more things to consider.
No single card will set itself apart from the rest when it comes to one game; you cannot match best preformance in game x with best card. (If that makes sense)

Also, if you are looking to set the graphics to the lowest and run at a 100 FPS constant, than you are weird and should probably have a long talk with Fatal1ty :p

And I quite liked Doom 3! A bit slow at times, but fun and definitly scary.

    doom3 is awesome.

and the whole point of the tickrate in the doom3 engine is to maintain 60 fps constantly with 0 frame fluxuations during gameplay so the idea is to have a minimum of 60fps system overhead, so if you dip below 60fps at any point in the game at all your running it under par. and that takes a fairly strong system to accomplish, roughly a doom3 timedemo demo1.demo score of 105-115fps to play doom3 the way its ment to be played, with the minimum frame being at the 60fps tickrate level. not 27-33fps like some online reviews and some people would say the standard for smooth gameplay is, smooth my a$$ i say.

Doom 3 was great game. Still one of the best engines out there cause it plays well with all videocards. That is why that game became so popular was it's ability to play on cards like the 5200. Heck even the ti series could play it. I think id software were very smart in making a game engine so versatile. If i remember correct the first card to actually play the game on the highest settings was a 6800ultra(512mb) card. Then you had sli which really helped.
