Hey guys, which ATI drivers would you consider to be the best drivers?
a lot people will argue over this, but the majority seems to go with 3.7
3.7 beta, newer is almost always better.
i've read beta drivers are always better since they have fixes and enhancements that didn't make it past microsoft whql. is that true? i'm currently using omega based on 4.10 beta.
Beta drivers aren't certified but I don't think that is why they are better. Hopefully the new 4.11 release will have a polished 8.7 driver that is better than the beta (not that there is anything wrong with the current beta).
thanx for da input guyz, anymore suggestions?
8.07, by far. They're the only drivers I've ever had for any card that actually gave me a solid performance increase. (they gave me a very significant boost)
But im really waiting for the 4.11, then that might change
Maybe you can get a few extra frames per second or a better synthetic benchmark with an older version, but that's either a matter of inaccurate testing or the driver not functioning correctly or precisely i.e. not behaving as the software directed; running at reduced functionality or quality.
Anything else, image quality or application compatibility is a placebo effect or a result of other an inconsistent reference environment.
In short, ATI’s revenue dependency on performance margins is such that it wouldn’t be smart to think they’d actually release inferior drivers (especially in as many generations ago as some people suggest), with the exception of a serious mistake that is later corrected.
From personal experience, having owned multiple Radeon cards since the drivers became acceptable (9500, 9600 XT, 9800 SE, 9800 Pro), each consequitve driver release has either notably improved performance and compatibility or only reduced it within an acceptable unnoticeable margin.
I doubt this reply is going to be popular since it isn't as diplomatic as the normal “whatever works best for you, but I find the current versions are always best!" answer
yeh i would go with Temporal's logic i think sum's it up nicely
I like 4.8
4.11 betas are the ones for me, aside from providing the best perfo in the games I play which tbh isnt that noticable, they also give good benchmark scores in most titles AND let me play Star Wars KOTOR without crashing randomly.
Cant wait for the 4.11 official release, should be good.
WTF! You totally broke the 7000 mark, very nice.
He does kill it doesnt he?
680MHz on the core of his X800, 2.9GHz on his FX-53...damn.
Yeah, you have some amazing overclocks on your card as well. Did you do a V-mod?? Also, you might try tweaking some of your options. You are running a faster FSB, processor, and video card and somehow I still got a higher score than you. I need to update my sig, with 585 Mhz Core / Memory I got 6245, still not what I would like, but I don't think I could do anymore without a volt mod.
Although, you might have difficulty getting an X800 working on anything under 4.6...
Yeah, its all work in progress atm, first time with an Intel chip and ATI card for quite a while now so im slowly sussing it out. Oh btw, no vmod as yet.
9800pro temporal my second machine.
