X1950 Pro AGP, that was incredible upgrade from my old Geforce 6800 AGP and quality improved too.
Later HD3870, these cards were not as powerful as Geforce 8800GT, but they also costed less, I had no problems with it and card performed flawlessly in all games at 1680x1050 at that time. I think HD3000 series didn't get enough credit at the time.
Now I have HD4870 and love it too, it still holds it's own very strong, I will definitely skip HD5000 series now :)

I would not buy 3870 X2, 4870 X2 or 5970 or Crossfire cards though, I had two 3870s in the past in Crossfire and one time was enough :)

    HD 5850 .

Huge !! jump from my previous card. Extremely silent and cool. Highly overclockable - easily reaching 5870's speeds at much lower price.

9800 Pro - could even run Doom 3 maxed with decent fps. That says it all. Loved it.

X1900 XT - The last true masterpiece of ATi. It was still kicking ass in all games of 2008 maxed with 720p resolution... Except Crysis. It was able to run it on ~30fps on Medium+High+VeryHigh tweaked config. If it wasn't for Full HD, it'd still hold its stand for another year or so.

Based on my experience I can say that it's definitely not Rage IIc or X1800 XT.

Radeon 9800Pro. My first ATI card after many years of NVIDIA (and 3DFX before that...). Completely blew me away. Amazing AA performance for its time. Probably my all-time favourite graphics card beside my Voodoo 1.

My 4870X2 is actually the graphics card that I've owned the longest, which does say something about its performance (which is still decent), and probably something about my fading interest in computer hardware as well.

I would have to say the 2900xt. It had the architecture that my 5850 currently sports today and makes it so awesome. They took their fermi and made it cheaper, progressively more powerful, and drew less power. ie the leap from 2900xt to 3870<

Renegade u a very smart person, ur opinion is well preserved but 2900XT was one of the worst ATI cards ever, the later cards are other aspect.

the 4800 and 5800 series just blew me away, ATI went from hot hot to hot performance, cooler power and best value for bang, just wish the drivers were better even though i can't point on a issue.

Thank you for respecting my intelligence and opinion. Hear me out though and maybe you will agree. The ati 2900xt came out with horrible immature drivers, dx9 games were a majority where the card was designed for new dx10 instructions. unfortunately the reference card came with 512mb of memory which was rather crippling when competing against a 8800gtx at high high res. Most reviews did not even go above 4:3 1600x1200. to even top that off the card was launched to go after the 8800gts 640/320 not the 8800gtx and ultra that everyone reviewed it against. This card even was the first to support folding at home from what i remember. The card was too modern for its own good.

Hmm... best ATI card... I'd have to go with the 4770s I had a while back. :D

    Definitely my 5870,

After owning a 4870X2 I just wanted a single GPU card that was on par performance wise, but didn't have issues with heat/noise/crossfire and ATi delivered with it's 5870.

Good point,i can't argue bout ur opinion but i would like to say ATI improve A LOT since 2900XT, the 4800 and 5800 series is ATI top work, so much technology in those chips, being a fan of ATI, and owner of lot generations, i still think the HD5850 is the most impressive, hek on idle 25W is just amazing thing.
