ah man let hope RTX4090 come out soon so we can test the next gen CPUs at their best :D

So performance per watt is roughly the same and DDR5 provides negligible improvement to performance as any other DDR iteration before it. Am i the only one unimpressed relative to the hype?

There where never a hype. This is a alder lake "refresh"

Like Ryzen 1 series to 2 series. There is nothing to be impressed over. Ryzen 1800x to Ryzen 5800x3d isn't impressive either, because it's "4'th" (3rd refresh) Ryzen. Gain in performance is to be expected :)

More like what AMD did with Zen to Zen+. Just improvements to cache and higher clocks.
Raptor lake only increases cache L2 cache by 1.5MB per core. So lower cache misses there, but slightly higher latency.
The rest is just higher clocks. This last, probably accounts for most of the gains.

At least 5800x3D saw bigger performance increases than 5% in games compared to its older brothers, and it wasn't due to just changing RAM from DDR4 to DDR5..

And they made the cpu slower than 5800x in other tasks than cpubound gaming. Way more expensive too. Nice job :p

I wanted 5950x3d, but they failed

Speaking of 5800X3d, a few days ago I noticed prices had gone down ~50€ around here.
When they launched a few months ago, they were selling for around 520 euros. But now the are selling for around 475 euros.
Still expensive, but a step on right direction.

We should probably expect zen4 regaining the performance crown for amd.

Imagine 5800x3d being faster in gaming than 7800x. It may happend :p
I want the 7 series 3D for gaming.

Nah, DDR5 alone will provide at least 10% more performance, let alone AMD improvements and tweaks for ZEN4.
About 5800x3D, I could care less about performance in other tasks than gaming :p Even so its performance in other kind of tasks is more than enough really.
Tho higher price always sucks but hardly surprising especially in current times.

I depends... AMD f*cked up memory performance before ; read Zen :p

Sounds like you really want them to fail with ZEN4 somehow lol, tbh I don't see it happening this time around but we'll see I guess..

I like fast hardware, and don't care what name it is. Testing pretty much everything new, and I wasn't impressed about any Zen before 5800x3d. Have 5950x for my workstation.

Memory has been a pain on every zen with "millions" of agesa and bios updates. I just hope Zen 4 figures out ddr5 on the first try. I don't take anything for shure. Many ddr5 problems the first months of Alder Lake too, but nothing close to zen1,2 and 3.

Not only is that objectively false, but if this is the mindset that chip makers put themselves in then we have a bleak future.

generally agree but AL was a clusterfuck compared to Ryzen 3 - esp the fact that neither AL or RL play nice with four sticks of RAM

This was mostly userfailure. Not using 4x ram sets, instead using 2x 2x ram sets with too fast memory. Not qvl...
Ryzen don't like 4x very fast memory either, nor does z390 or z490 ;)

I am not able to find a 4 module DDR5 kit for sale anywhere in Denmark, so calling it userfailure is a bit harsh.
Only choice is to find server modules.

Look how many DDR5 is supported with 4x dimms over 4800mhz on Msi Unify 4x dimm board:

    https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-Z690-UNIFY/support#mem

If people don't read the manual, it's a userfailure :)

Some people got even 5600mhz 4x dimms to work fine (hynix), but far from all. Manual OC IS needed.

2x32GB Hynix, and 6000mhz + is doable for most easy :) That's the protip of the day ;)

    G.skill 2x32GB 6000 cl30 is a nice kit.
