Go to the HD manufactures site and download the diagnostic tool.

    1) what brand and model hard drive?
    2) what is it doing or not doing that you think it is bad?
    3) how old is the drive?
    4) Is it a mechanical drive or an ssd?

Run Check Disk and tick "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". If it doesn't pass the test, if it hangs or gives errors, you should return it. Checking SMART data after the scan (and before for reference) is good thing to do. If you see increased amount (or any) current pending sectors or reallocated sectors after the scan, it's definitely failing.
