    Hi guys ,

I currently own 2x5870s but recently bought a 120hz LG monitor , which would give the option of running 3d if required. Now i used to be an nVidia only guy up until ATI brought out the 4870. So im kinda out of the nVidia loop at the min.

So basically what im asking is , which card would give me the same sort of performance as my 2 5870s. And i would probably would rather have a single card over SLI. Would a 580 be the best option with SLI possibly down the line for BF3?

    Cheers guys

I just went from two 5870's to a single 580. Under perfect circumstances (read crossfire works well) the 5870's definitely outperform. However, so far I have not noticed because the frame rate is still high and I'm happier as my gameplay is much smoother.

If you want to go from 5870 x-fire to NVIDIA I would not get anything less then a GTX 580....if you sell both your 5870s you should be able to pay a decent chunk of the card off with your old cards.

Thanks for the advise guys. Im gonna sell these 5870's and go for a single GTX 580 and get me a 2nd 1 for BF3. Dont get me wrong , the 5870s are great but crossfire at times can be a headache (nothing too bad) but i wanna get a 3D Vision kit down the line too.

How is the GTX 590?? I know its very expensive at the min etc , but is there any headaches (like games not running well or only using 1 core?) using a 590??

Again , thanks for the reply guys, appreciated!

590 isn't a very good card, it has tons of issues. 2x580 is much better than 1x590.

If you want working games i suggest you stick with a Single GPU Card, no SLI or whatever.

I had a 5970 and had NOTHING but trouble for 8 months. Ever since i bought a Single 580 all my issues are GONE!.

Yeah a friend of mine has a 5970 RoadKill , hes had numerous problems with games not running correctly , while my 2x5870s haven't gave me too many problems to be honest. Games which work 100% for me are Bc2-Vietnam, Medal of Honor , Crysis 2 and Homefront etc. And when they work they really do fly.

As i said , i will go down the single card route which will be 580 then probs get another 1 down the line. Will skip the 590 methinks.

Thanks for the answers guys and hopefully you'll see a lot more of me on the green side of the forum :)

Well the thing is those games work perfectly well with a much much weaker GPU.

I agree. One 580 is plenty unless you have a 30 inch monitor at 2560x1600 res. Only at those resolutions will you ever need two 580s.

well i suppose that's true to a certain extent mate. A friend has a 4850 running BC2 and it doesn't run too well on full settings and he has the same CPU as me. Thats not to say its not playable i suppose but its quite choppy when maxed out.

Anyway , thanks for the replies :)

    580 should cut it...

I went from two HD5870s (like yours) to two GTX460s and it didn't feel like a downgrade at all...

Another 580 single user here with a setup similar to yours; extremely happy with my setup.

My last multi setup was 4890’s. From now on I’m sticking with a high end single gpu because I have very limited time and I’d rather spend that time playing instead of configuring or trouble shooting.

Good to know Clawhamer , your right , less configuring and more playing is good, time is at a premium thanks to the kids :)

Got another question, have any of you guys tried 3d Vision or do you intend to in the future?

    ;)

I haven’t tried 3D yet because I’d have to replace my current monitor... and I’m just not ready to do that yet. When the time does come for a new monitor I’ll give it a try then maybe, still seems a bit gimmicky for this old-timer.
