    thanks for the tip cadcat.

i have had a look into the driver and made a patchscript for win7 x64.
but i have also altered soem files to accept my hd2600 device id. this might not be necessary for you guys to do that.

so please test first if opengl acceleration is available, if not you might be required to make soe minor modifications to these files : C7_98297.msi,atiicdxx.dat.

please give some feedback if this is working by applying the patchscript only !

the 5xxx series should work now also.

    here it is :
the 8.72 driver can be found here :http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/fire/Pages/fire_win7-64.aspx

btw. since i am only having win 7 x64 installed on my laptop now, i can not test for the other os´s. and i probably won´t find time in the next 2 weeks for that, so please wait until i´ll find some time to make the scripts and test them.

    @ cadcat

    happy now ? :)

did you follow the thread so far ? have you read that the real world performance with maya isn´t as good as it should be. a workaround for missing performance in maya is using a modified atiogl.xml like the one i posted in the beginning of this thread.

you should get specviewperf to test if the mod has worked or not. if it is already working you might wanna consider using the modified workstation profile ( atiogl.xml) i posted here. but be aware that the atiogl.xml modification is experimental...

there was a small error in the patchscript i posted yesterday. please read here for the info on the error :
    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=312673&page=2

i corrected the above posted patchscript.

if you have downloaded and used the script from above that i posted yesterday : ... it won´t work.

please patch the driver with the new script, that one works.

First off thanks for your efforts schoko :)

The driver works OK on my 5850 but don't see any performance improvement in specviewperf, still gets owned by a 3850 lol

Tried modding and reinstalling it a few times with driver clean in between just to make sure I wasn't doing anything silly...

Might need to do something with these 2 little devils you mentioned? C7_98297.msi,atiicdxx.dat ;)

I patched the driver 8.72 already.. As soon as possible I'll install and test it on my hd3870@V7700 and I'll let you know
    ..
Should be fantastic to use it for a new 5850@V8800!! I hope it will be possible soon!!

    My results (i7 930@4.0 ghz, ram 1600 9-9-9-24):

    HD3870@7700 8.634 Win7 64bit

    maya-02 246.86

In the real world with a benchmark (ocus), that use the real proengineer program, I didn't notice performance improvements.

Now, I have to see in the stability, afterfx, etc. in daily use (the most important test!)..

    Very good work schoko..:)

i tried the new patchscript on the 8.72 drivers and a HD 5850 card. the card is recognized as a firepro V8800 and the drivers install without any glitch, but the card only runs in an safe mode.

i don't think, that i had done something wrong, because my HD 4870 @ V8700 runs as it should.

Currently using MR 5870, which is based on desktop 5770 with a lower clock, there's a FirePro M7820 equavalent but it's not in the driver. Is it possible to mod it as a V8800?

no, it's not possible. the card has to be listed in the driver. you have to wait for the next driver release. and the desktop HD 5770 card is not the equivalent for the V8800. there will be another cards releases soon, like the V7800, V5800 and V3800 etc.

    Multiple (different) video cards

I'm using 2 different video cards and am not sure what to do exactly. My cards are:
    • 4870x2 (9441, 2GB, primary) --> V8700 Duo
    • 4870 (9440, 1GB, secondary) --> V8700
    (running on win7 x64, 8.72 drivers)

Right now, I'm adding both device IDs to the .inf, and am running the patchscript to force capabilities for the 9441. When I install the driver, I do the have-disk method for one of the 4870x2 display adapters (mine list three total: two 4870x2 and one 4870).

Driver installs, but I'm having problems with the SolidWorks viewport. When I click somewhere in the viewport, it seems to save that "image", and if I click again (after having moved/rotated the object) the viewport will display that image instead of the correct view. Also, if the image is being shown and I move the mouse over anything in the design tree, only part of the viewport updates (e.g. I select a feature of the part and now see a rectangle containing the view of that feature, but the rest of the viewport still shows the image).

If I run SolidWorks on monitors controlled by the 9440, it immediately throws windows visuals into Basic mode. Other than this, however, the program works as it should.

Note that this happens with the both the original (March 2, 2010) and modded (~2 Feb, 2010) atiogl.xml files. Also, this happens with both the 8.72 and 8.634 drivers.

    Questions I have:

    • Am I following the correct procedure for softmodding multiple video cards? (it seems rivatuner only allows forcing compatibility for one card, so I chose my primary card)
    • Are the problems in SolidWorks simply a peculiarity with SolidWorks or is it more likely to be related to my setup?
    • Is the modded atiogl.xml file still necessary for the 8.72 drivers? Is there a version newer than the one from feb, 2010?
    • What is the correct entry in the .inf for a v8700 Duo mod? Currently, I have:

I just want to make sure this is correct, since the V8700 Duo uses R700 GLXT, but nothing else listed in the .inf uses those drivers (actually, no other cards do (http://developer.amd.com/gpu_assets/PC_IDList_Oct2009.txt.))

Thanks for any help you can provide

you can try this, although i think it will not work:

i think you have to prepare two driver packs - one for the 4870x2 and another one for the 4870, because they don't have the same device IDs.

the drivers should be installed separately with the have disk method.
i don't know how the drivers behave when installed one after the other. there will be something overwritten.

so i think it is not possible to install two patched drivers for different cards. maybe there is a possibility to use the 4870x2 as a firepro v8700, so it disables the second core.

but first i will patch and install the drivers separately. and then verify the work by running the specview test, to see if everything has gone fine.

    just give it a try.

    Hello there,

I'm new here, I came because I want to mod an HD4870 in a V8750.
I just have one question, where can I find the patchscript for the latest ( 8.72 ) FirePro drivers? Is there a way to do these script by ourselves?

By the way, is there someone who had tried to *hard*mod an adapter to a firepro one? Basicaly, changing the BIOS device ID?
I've just tried (since I didn't want to tamper with driver signing in Windows 7 x64), the board is recognized as a FirePro, and the drivers installs correctly, but do not work. Is there something else, appart vendor ID and device ID, that differs inside the BIOS from regular adapters to firepro ones?
Since the softmod only modify these IDs, i thought that it would work at first.
If someone else had tried hardmods, maybe we sould open a thread about that.

@artistman, I tried doing that, but windows didn't seem to want to accept the second driver (atikmdag.sys doesn't change). I had gotten it working somehow back in february, but I can't remember how. Guess it's just gonna be a lot of trial by error for now.

If anyone else has any tips, please let me know. Thanks.

    Softmod of HD5970

Ok im new to softmoding. I have a HD5970 and i would like a to ask a few questions.
Would the HD5970 theorectically softmod to act like 2 underclocked FirePro 3D V8800's in crossfire? or is it impossible to tell if the HD5970 will be able to be softmodded at all until ATI release the drivers and it is tested? Would i be able to get the softmod to work in Windows 7 64bit?

Am i correct in thinking i have to wait for the following?
1 ATI to release the V8800 drivers,
and 2.Rivatuner to be updated to support softmodding to V8800,
and 3.Someone here that has a HD5970 to make a patchmod that works for HD5970 to V8800? or,
    4. Learn how to make a patchmod and do it myself.

or is 2. irrelevant does the patchmod effectivly 'update' rivatuner to be able to softmod to V8800?

any information about my situation would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance

EDIT: I just looked on ATI site and they have released the V8800 drivers does that mean all i ahve to wait for is someone to write a patchmod? or do i need to wait till the actual card gets released for sale or some reason? eg would someone actually have to buy a V8800 to develope a HD5970-V8800 patchmod?

EDIT: I just noticed the V8800 is a Cypress XT core and the HD5970 is a Hemlock XT core would this mean a HD5970-V8800 sotmod would be impossible?
