ROG has just launched its new Xonar Phoebus Solo sound card. It’s the same Phoebus tech underneath – 118dB SNR and 600 ohm headphone amp – but without the desktop control... ASUS ROG Launches The Xonar Phoebus Solo
At this point I'm done with trying ASUS soundcards. The driver situation for all their cards has been absolutely godawful. I've only owned the STX but I hear the original Pheobus is essentially unusable for the most part. In the mean time I purchased a Creative ZRX for the 5.1 and I haven't had any issues aside from knowing that ASIO input isn't there. Regardless I feel like soundcards are a joke now. You're better off going digital out to dedicated receiver. Especially because the current 5.1 speaker selection for direct out is terrible. So unless you need a headphone amp, I don't really see the point.
+1 since day one nothing but troubles with my current xonar phoebus their drivers and their support are so bad lost to much money for a half working soundcard and even now their drivers are still beta
Never had a problem that wasn't easily fixed, even if it was by using third party drivers. Something I've had to do with creative products in the past, it's apples to oranges.
The Xonar D2X I'm using is getting a bit old but the unified (unofficial) driver package - http://maxedtech.com/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/ - has worked pretty well, I might upgrade the sound card eventually but first I need a proper speaker setup or it wouldn't make much of a difference. (Upgrading the sound card probably isn't something that's done all that often, I'll replace it if it starts breaking down of course, Realtek on-board chip would work until a replacement should it come to that.)
the biggest problem i have with my card (phoebus) is channel switching when i start watching a movie or even during a movie you hear a loud CLICK from the speakers and all channels are mixed i am using analog out to my receiver (5.1) and stereo sounds upmixed to all speakers when i trow in a new music file CLICK channels mixed again (vlc player MPC all same problem) sometimes it goes good for hours and sometimes i cant even make it for 5 minutes
I have yet to find a sound card that can tear me away from my STX. Ok the Phoebus is intended for gaming, but I love the quality of STX, plus the fact I can plug my guitar into it for amazing sound. the desktop control is great too. I hear many complaints about the phoebus, but surely it wasn't that bad of a soundcard was it?
Hopefully this means new drivers come out. Im using the betas(not on asus website) that are much better than the release drivers, but cant hurt to have new ones. I myself havent had any issues other than the headphone amp setting not sticking upon reboot but that was fixed with the betas im using now
Ya here you go. http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthrea...Drivers-thread&p=189901&viewfull=1#post189901 it also updates the cards firmware.
Where would I even purchase one? I only see the package for sale at a handful of places (outrageously priced of course). Against my better judgement, I'm considering one since I just got DT 990 Pro headphones, which have 250 Ohms resistance and make my X-Fi + mini amp cry. Or so it seems.
I remember now i tried those before Had to move the card to another pc to update the firmware After installing im still having the same issues a loud CLICK sometimes when opening a map or playing an mp3 or movie and the channels are switched again
