Hi guys, was reading asus specs one 500 series and found this:

    M.2_1 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280

    - Only Intel® 11th Gen processors support PCIe 4.0 x4 mode, this slot will be disabled for other CPUs

Seems all asus 500 series mb first M2_1 port will only work with rocket lake cpu?

Also some users reported that doesnt work at all with comet lake.

I went to MSI site and says this:

    M2_1 slot

      • Supports up to PCIe 4.0 x4 for 11th Gen Intel® CPU (From CPU)
      • Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 & SATA 6Gb/s for 10th Gen Intel® CPU (From B560 chipset)1
      • Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280 storage devices
So msi will work at 3.0 on first M2_1 port with comet lake and on asus ones, it wont work at all with comet lake? There is any word from asus about this? Maybe a bios update? Or it´s HW limitation?

Yup for gen4 you need 11th gen cpu.
on 'most' z490s and all z590s this applies.

Hi. But is not the same.

On asus M2_1 will not work at all with comet lake.

On MSI M2_1 will work at 3.0 with comet lake.

Waiting for some confirmation about this.

Hi. Yes, seems weird. Maybe MSI routed or linked the M2_1 to both cpu lanes and chipset lanes to make it compatible with both. Doesnt know. Didnt check other manufacturers, will take a look.

Contacted asus and they confirmed it.

If you use a gen10 cpu with 500 series mb, M2_1 will be disabled. So, on mb with just 2 x m2 slots, you will have only 1 available. The other wont work at all.
