Ever since i upgraded my 4770K to a 11700 (Non-K) i noticed some old games no longer run.

So far this includes Need for Speed: Porsche 2000 and No One Lives Forever.

Been troubleshooting for 10 hours now, even with help of the NOLF community.

    - Compatibility Modes
    - Fan Patches
    - Clean Windows install
    - Toggle every BIOS option
    - Remove two sticks of RAM
    - Install on different drive
    - Set CPU to 4 cores

None of this works... i tried it on the old Intel NUC on the attic with the same Win 10 Pro 21H1, and it works just fine there without having to adjust anything.

Now i ran NOLF with the same GPU about a year or two ago, so it's unlikely that's the cause.

Also Windows Log says lithtech.exe crashed due to ntdll.dll. But the same thing happens on a fresh install, with just the soundcard and gpu drivers. So it's not an OS problem.

So that makes me think it's hardware related, perhaps the CPU.

    --------------------------------------------

If there is someone here with an 11th Intel, i would like to ask you if you could perhaps try and run it. You can download it from http://nolfrevival.tk No need to change anything, it should just work after installation, it did on the NUC as well.

    How did you do this?
MSconfig CPU limit or Task manager Affinity?

If its the same deal as NFS:Undercover, only msconfig cpu limit (reboot required) will permit them to work.

Too much RAM is also a possibility.

Likely just through the bios, judging by his message.

Yes, i changed cores to 4 in the BIOS, as my previous CPU was also 4 Cores.

Going from 32GB to 16GB RAM didn't matter, my old PC had 16GB as well, so going lower won't matter.

I've been playing many many old games, but this problem i'm facing now is on another level.

If i can't play it, so be it. But it would be nice to get to the bottom of it.

Could also be a cpu errata or microcode defect.

    Very game specific then.

    Dungeon Keeper 2
    Populous: The Beginning
    The X-Files
    Jurassic Park: Trespasser
    Black & White
    Battlefield 1942
    Anno 1602
    Black & White 2
    American McGee's Alice
    Unreal Tournament
    Max Payne
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein
    No One Lives Forever 2

All these games currently installed work flawless.

such issues often are, im going over the spec update atm.

theres a few known, the pdf hasn't been updated to include deployed workarounds (no revisions so far)

    https://cdrdv2.intel.com/v1/dl/getContent/634808

Unusual Crashing has been noted in the bios's since march, there are probably a few bugs in the cpu to find and patch.

    Try this

    Variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
    Variable value: ~0x200000200000000

    https://software.intel.com/content/...ha-crash-bug-requires-application-update.html

also try reverting the system audio rates to 24b/48khz or lower.

apparently porsche 2000 won't start when a h100i's usb cable is connected......
    https://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129762

so try disabling anything HID that isn't the keyboard or mouse.

How are these microcode updates deployed anyways, via BIOS updates or Windows?

When does the issue start? As you try load up the game, or during gameplay ?

Both motherboard chipsets and CPUs can contain the mentioned errata. It is likely not a logical error but game calling an unknown instruction. It is usually invalid instruction for graphics, sound function or other drivers or libraries. Your newer system does come with different drivers which might not recall same function under the same game's instruction which causes game to crash. Later Intel hardware is quite different from earlier pentium 4, core2 and 1st to 4th gen core i7s. I recommend using virtual OS and try if the game will work that way.
Your multiple HIDs in device manager are higher level controllers for your peripherals.

    quite unlikely,

intel has historically never removed instructions which is what led to the x86 isa being so convoluted, its far more likely a fixable bug in the front end cisc than an unfixable risc flaw too.

intel maintains a fairly static front end end which maintains more or less an unchanging IEC compliance - software doesn't get to talk directly with the internal RISC core for a reason.

    When i load it up.

NOLF has this Launcher, and as soon as i press launch, i get a little black window which then closes after a couple of seconds without a warning or error.

Only Windows Log shows why it crashes.

Don't have Need for Speed installed anymore, but i can check tomorrow if it's the same error.

Well, No One Lives Forever works now.

I was given a DLL file from Alien vs Predator, which limits how many USB Devices are being Reported.

Seems disabling one HID device works as well.

No idea what it does, but all USB ports still work.

The Driver section says "HID_Raw_Inst.NT" for that particular HID device.

And Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed works as well now.

Seems that particular HID device is related to Touchscreen.

I guess one of the display outputs on my new motherboard has support for that? Otherwise i don't see why it would install a Touchscreen Device.

Theres no touch screen, its an RGB controller :D

You should keep a hold of this dll, many older games don't filter HID devices properly so they try to enumerate all of them, this not only crashes some games but delays enumeration, makes load times slower and even causes performance issues.

Well my Phanteks NEON strips still work, so maybe it's the non-addressable header.

Regarding the DLL, using it in NOLF does make the game start, but it won't allow me to use mouse clicks. Seems to happen for more people.

    https://avpunknown.com/avp2files/avp2dll/dinput.zip

DLL fine works for fine for Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed it seems.
