There's another massive take-over in technology land. It appears ARM has been purchased by softbank. UK technology firm ARM Holdings is to be bought by Japan's Softbank for $32bn it confirmed on Mo...

Am I the only one, who doesn't like ARM?

As such I am more than OK with them being sold, bought, killed off or whatever.
I do realize, their tech is powering our smartphones, but for me it is a bogus, the world would have been better had it gone with different tech.

ARM designed for decades low power device .ARM is the best implementation of RISC arhitecture and is worldwide available , not only in your Iphone , but in automotive , Navigation , GPS ,aeronautics , etc.... all are made by different types of ARM processor.
Is a big hit for UK ... and now they can really feel the effects of BREXIT

Considering they wanted ARM before the Brexit, Softbank want ARM to remain in the UK and create more jobs, but hey that's a bad thing right?

Just like Cadburys, when they got bought out and the Americans moved the jobs to Poland and that was BEFORE any EU vote.

That deal is shady. Paying 43% premium(as reported at least) over closing market value, only shady things are the reason for it.

Tinfoil hat on: Like implementing microcode, backdoors, inside ARM processors, software etc etc.

And we are not talking premium as in a couple mil here. We are talking 11 DIGIT numbers.

Tinfoil hat off: I hope UK at least benefits in some way or another from it.

Another company sold-off. Doesn't surprise me tbh. Brexit has nothing to do with this one, it's more pre-Brexit than post Brexit despite the deal being sealed on Brexit side.

It's Japan ... the worst thing a backdoor could do is our devices being secret transformers or something :p

Cadbury said they were moving to Poland, Kraft said they'd keep Cadbury in the UK and then went back on it, ARM nor Softbank have said they are moving ARM out of the UK.

Do you know this is a huge misconception? They have no power\performance advantage, not at all. True, it is a good technology, but that's it. As I already told - there are many good technologies and many much better technologies out there. If ARM disappears, I won't be sad.

Such as? You can't just go around saying there are better technologies out there and then not actually say what they are or even say why they are better.

If there's some technology out there that's somehow better than ARM in what quite frankly is a stagnant market I'd like to know what it is so I can invest in it, cos they'll either get bought for big bucks or make big bucks

"The deal includes no visible cost-cutting, and SoftBank even pledged to increase the number of jobs in Britain. “The independence aspect of the deal is very important,” said Simon Segars, ARM’s chief executive."

He means the Intel Atom battery killers that even Intel stopped making. There is nothing else out there.

The good old days...I must have in one way or another been involved in the manufacture of millions of these devices and similar for VLSI.

Softbank is Japanese, not Chinese. No tinfoil hat needed for this.
