Shortly after announcing the development of their own processors and pretty much abandoning Intel, AMD is next, as their GPUs are phased out. And that means that Apple wants total autonomy of their CP...

Interesting news. From one side this is great, we will have a "new" player on the GPU market (not that Apple will sell their GPUs to PC consumers), meanwhile, on the other side, I'm really concerned about the actual Apple products.

They are all designed with breakage in mind, at already steep prices. With further isolation of their ecosystem I can only guess what degree of "you can't repair this" they will try to pull off this time.

While from the standpoint of technology I think this is great, on the other hand, this move towards further isolation can only do one thing - harm the consumer.

^ both are wrong - Apple has just rebranded to Apply. Still, top-secret info under NDA, but Hilbert made a silent leak.

Maybe Apple will infringe a bunch of AMD patents just to make things easier for themselves. They have experience of AMD graphics as it is. AMD would go bankrupt if they tried to sue Apple, after all.

I guess Apple is tired of getting hot and slow GPUs, so this is a VERY good move.

Of course Apple aims to develop everything in house, officially for ecosystem reasons, but practically to cut out on costs they would have otherwise.
Only that this makes them reliable on their own fab contracts even more I guess... walls usually not only keep other GPU vendors out, but also you out of their markets. So no Apple GPU will ever be used in something non-apple. Effectively, Apple takes themselves out of the equation totally...

Thread cleanup, sorry. the article should have been on hold instead of live as it was obviously not finished :)

Metal is mainly an API, mean that they will still have a compatibility with AMD or NVidia (mac pro need some extra power sometime)
But yes indeed, as they change the CPU architecture, a GPU that follow is obiously a big bonus (don't forget that Mac do better because hardware and software are made for each other)
About the compatibility with windows there isn't so much issue, not official, but there is already Windows to work on it...
For the game it isn't so great as big company doesn't care about Apple user and don't do real program for mac... (while most indie does and it work prety fast).
For those already using the Metal API it is a bit "complicated" (issues with Wargaming.net, some Steam game, Blizzard), also some engine, (very used but not so well programed lol ) doesn't work...
But it's new so let's see in the future, but this is a very good news (despite i am not too much Mac)

I get the impression Apple is going to start off with Macbooks for their ARM series, where it is more reasonable they'd make their own GPU. However, AMD already supports Metal, so I suspect that until Apple comes up with a dGPU good enough to outpace AMD's, they will continue to use AMD for desktops.

That's the sort of thing where I really don't understand Apple's move toward Metal. All that's doing is pushing away developers. On the other hand, maybe Apple doesn't want multi-platform software, because they know they're slower than the competition and don't want that to be highlighted in benchmarks.

No one outside of the Apple ecosystem would even want anything Apple. An Apple video card would be twice as expensive as a comparable video card from AMD or NVidia. Only Apple zombies enjoy paying for the imaginary prestige of owning an Apple device.

Apple is a control freak, for better or worse.

I like to have everything proprietary as much as possible.

Oh you're preaching to the choir here. Just because voices of fellow gurus came up in relation to "another GPU player on the market".

And with it a closed market and possible custom connection and price inflation, I'm sure there be positives as well for apple owners but i find it hard to think of any.

Wait, it clearly says that for Intel Macs the GPU options are 'Intel, Nvidia, and AMD'. Intel Macs are not changing. Metal API support has always been available for these GPUs. No change there.

As for ARM based Mac's (which are replacing non-pro line, never had AMD GPUs in them) they will be using their Apple silicon, which already has GPU built in. I am not sure what this article is trying to point out.

The only replacement here is for non-pro lineup, intel CPUs with Apple CPUs and Intel iGPUs with Apple iGPUs.

    C'mon HH.

They are good to use technologies of other companies, they are not good and creators of own hardware from the scratch.. we will see it. Its not good for anyone sharing technologies is good for market.

Like some of their software needed for device deployment, which is the only reason for me having a MacBook at work.

Speaking from the standpoint of professional commercial use, some people prefer to go with the device they know will work reliable without needing to do a lot of extras.
But seen quite a lot going over to PC's instead over the last 10 years, since Apple's pricing just no longer justifies it's use for certain jobs where PC's do as well.

To the locked ecosystem/pricing discussion. Apple is free to do what they want with their product. Everyone has option to buy or not to buy it. I did always opt to not buy their products.
