anybody staying with xp so you can still play your dx9/8 games without any vista game issues. When will I be able to buy a new game computer with vista and not have major game issues with my dx9/8 games, if that possible.

    Me.

Tried Vista, decided its best for casual users. I like to game and the registry in Vista is not easy to navigate, that's another minus. It's a RAM eater too, even more than the 128mb in XP.

I'm not switching do to money, i think 100-500 dollars is too much for any operating system let alone a minor upgrade.

I am currently on Dual-Boot between 3 OS's and so far my main OS is XP. I installed Vista but i am having way too many problems with the drivers to begin with and the performance drop i get is quite noticeable on most games. For example Supreme Commander runs far worse in Vista for me than in XP.

i duel boot xp and vista ultimate 32 bit............and i mostly play games in vista , i have all the updated drivers and everything is running sweet.
the only reason i keep xp is because of starforce protection games....i have loads of starforce protected RTS games that i like to play and vista don't like starforce.......................other than that its vista all the way

No problems playing games or using modern applications in Vista x64. Aside from awful drivers last November, things have improved quite a bit (especially since ditching my 7900GT and getting an X1950XTX).

Vista is my only installed OS now, it's a keeper! :)

I am. I actually think the only reason I'll get Vista for home is when they pry XP from my cold, dead hands XD. Seriously though, if a new game comes out that's Vista-only and I see from peer reviews that the driver/bug situation doesn't stink, I will put Vista on a separate hard drive in a very removable fashion.

i'm also dual booting XP and Vista. i tried some games on vista and they run ok. others like BF2 are completely unplayable. however i haven't really tried much games. i am just waiting for new release games now.
didn't microsoft claim that even DX9 games will run better on vista?

anyway but i have a question. if i install a game in vista, and then load up XP and run the game from there would it make any difference. would the game run perfectly fine from XP? or do i need to also install it in XP?

I don't get the idea of dual booting. What's the purpose? I just don't get it. I could understand using windows and linux/unix. Especially when you use system specific applications. But two windows systems? Why? What for?

what for? you mean why not.

vista is still a new OS, and there are many things that don't work on it.
i kept XP as a backup just incase I need to run a certain program that doesn't work in vista. many games run like crap in vista, so you dual boot XP so you can still play those games...simple. there are also some programs i use which don't work in vista such as 3ds max. i just use it from XP.

Vista costs too much. Plus, I don't need it.
Hell, if I stopped playing so much, I wouldn't need Windows at all.

Windows Vista is kinda usless now, when 4GB ram will cost as much as 2GB ram now and Vista will be stable like XP after SP2, and majority of people will have HD2XXX or Geforce 8XXX series card, then only then Vista is the way to go, but we have to wait to that to happen.

As I said if you use system specific applications (3ds max) I understand. I just don't get guys who are all "vista is crap, but i watch movies on it so i dual boot".

I still use Windows 2000 SP4 for gaming (I use XP64 and Linux for work).
Until i am convinced that DX10 is really a huge step forward in gaming, it will stay that way.

i've been dual booting between vista and xp for a few months now and i would probably use vista as my main os if it wasn't for the random lockups i always get. with gaming, for me at least, xp is better performance wise.

Strange that you have problems running certain games. I have no problems whatsoever with any of the following:

    Alpha Prime
    Battlestations Midway
    BioHazard 4
Black & White 2 Battle of the Gods
    Black & White 2
    Brothers In Arms
    Brothers In Arms EiB
    Call Of Cthulhu DCoTE
    Call of Duty II
    City Life Deluxe
    Command & Conquer 3
    Company of Heroes
    Condemned - Criminal Origins
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
    Dawn Of Magic
    DreamFall Longest Journey
    Fable
    FarCry (64-bit)
    Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
    GTA San Andreas
    Jade Empire
    NeverWinter Nights
    NeverWinter Nights 2
    Oblivion
    PANZERS - Phase1
    Prey
    Pro Evolution Soccer 6
    Rayman Raving Rabbids
    Richard Burns Rally
    RollerCoaster Tycoon III
    Rush for Berlin
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl
    Serious Sam 2
    Spider-Man 3 (TM)
The Settlers II - 10th Anniversary
    The Sims™ 2
    Titan Quest
    Titan Quest - Immortal Throne
    Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
    Tomb Raider - Anniversary
    Two Worlds
    UEFA Champions League 2006-2007
    UT 2004 (64-bit)
    Virtua Tennis 3

What games run like crap for you?

Also, regarding 3DSMax, you have applied the Vista SP2 compatibility update right?
