So has there been any word on finally getting rid of ide cables all together? HDD's have jumped ship but those damn optical drives are still holding on. Do they have any new technology in store for optical drives yet? Im getting sick of those huge stiff cables getting in the way of everything. Its about time they come up with something better besides just giant round cables.

    i'm still using IDE.

U can get sata DVD writers - but not many companies make em and they are expensive. Pioneer make em I think.

IDE will be around for a little while yet - probably be 3-4 years AT LEAST b4 they start bringing out mobo's without IDE ports.

thats cool, I had no idea they came out already. Do they have any problems installing windows or is it all straightfoward like IDE?

SATA drives are there, they're just ridiculously expensive in comparison to IDE solutions. It's really not that bad, so long as you use rounded cables and not the flat ones most motherboards (unfortunately) come with.
