There is going to be a series AMD Zen-based 8-core Desktop processor in 2016 based on Socket FM3 according to two new screenhots from an AMD investor PDF presentation. This means next to yesterday's quad-cor...

2016 seems pretty exciting. The AMD Bristol Ridge APU with HBM graphics may finally start to offer R9 270(X) like performance from an IGP !! Gamers on a budget can do gaming at 1080p smoothly. Its a huge blow to nVidia midrange GPU segment. Even Intel will deliver better IGPs based on Iris graphics at 2016 for sure.

Looking forward to an APU from AMD that matches what's inside the PS4/XO.

"The GCN based IGP will even support HSA (3D stacked graphics memory)" That doesn't seem to make sense. HSA has nothing to do with stacked memory. Typo (should be HBM, right)?

Apparently both Microsoft and Sony have said that the generational changeover between consoles is going to be sped up. These APU's will probably find their way swiftly into new console releases.

So... Fm2+ was a joke... thanks AMD ...

How is it a joke? AMD still has at least 1 more processor series being released on FM2+.

I didn't say it was exciting, but it's coming.

AMD has to start focusing on performance. They can't do that, while maintaining backwards compatibility. At some point, AMD has to start showing profit from the CPU division.

FM2 is here for 3 years. Its EOL will come next year. So it is 4 year life cycle of socket, that's not worst ever, considering that APUs released this year will have some improvements.

One can say that AM3 is dead for very long time since FX-8350, as that is last CPU and then it got recycled and recycled and ...

New socket is way company overcomes weaknesses of old ones. Way to add new features which older one could not do.

AT some point you need to make evolve the chipsets, southbridges, northbridge etc.. DDR4 quad channel support, more SATA3 or whatever support, new USB etc etc... I dont see them coming in 2016 with new cpu architecture and dont support DDR4 at least.

Funny sometimes peoples who speak old chipsets / socket compatibility are the one too who are complaining about features.

This makes me wonder where this going to compete at as far as competition goes for CPUs. Is the Zen 8 core going up against the current or future X platform CPUs from Intel or the future Z platform Cpus?

Well, let see... Intel have a tic toc plan on "E" CPU's ( 6-8 cores ), i think remember that Skylake mainstream ( socket 1151 ) will have 4 cores max. along that even if Intel refresh their cpu enthusiast line eup, not sure there will be more than a 8 cores version, maybe 12 on the top end.. and the logic will be that it will be based on Broadwell, not Skylake..

Ofc, if the performance of Zen is here, many things can change in the between.

This said, the 8 cores is for start, i m nearly sure more cores versions are coming for workstations and servers chipsets ( and so why not then for desktop version if needed )..

But well, so far, we will need first to see how it perform, but globally, things seems goes in the right direction.

I think it is pretty scary... AMD drops seamicro and that made me think about possibility that AMD believes Zen and its variants will make big change even in server market.
That may be reason for that ridiculous leak stating 16/32 C/T CPU with both HBM and DDR4 controllers + 64PCIe lanes, and some more.

    On 14nm, quite possible. Because SPARC M7 is on 20nm with 10billion transistors, 4x DDR4 memory controllers, 32 cores / 256 threads, 3.6GHz+ , ...

With Intel stubbornly sticking to 4 cores (unless you want to lose an arm and a leg in the deal), it seems to me AMD would find a good market with an 8-core CPU, provided the cores don't suck and are even relatively close to Intel's. AMD's prices have always been good, after all.

I'm happy that AMD seems to be coming with something that might perform well and I'll probably get it when it comes out if it's really good but I think FM2+ was disappointing. Maybe it was just my enthousiasm that lead me to think it wouldn't be, and I won't make the same mistake this time..
HSA didn't become a thing and won't be a thing for a long while, so I was hoping they'd at least release something so people who went for the FM2+ platform could have something a bit more performance-oriented while they wait for the next thing but in the end it'll be Kaveri/Godaveri till the end, so the FM2+ platform will never see anything performance oritented..

Intel stuck to quad cores for the very sole reason that games are severely limited multithreading-wise. DX12 will be here to address this issue. This decision was likely the reason for Intel's success in the past years. CPUs as general-purpose as possible. Or to put it simply: strong single core and multi-core performance. Both. Not one.

More cores =/= better performance across the board. Look at the 8350 bottlenecking top-end GPUs in SLI. And i7s also happen to murder AMD's 8cores in multitasking despite having half the number of cores. Why would they switch?

Now if Zen actually delivers, Intel will have to consider 8cores. And they will battle on and on for performance supremacy. Which would make me very happy.
