Onlyin some cases like high fps/high refresh if you're playing in 4k the differences I doubt will be very noticeable if at all

Maybe we just don't need progress that is this fast and incremental? What have we really gained from 11 generations of Intel's Core CPUs that we wouldn't have gained from 5 generations in the same time period? A bunch of e-waste?

That is why i specified `a gamer's dream`. You buy a cpu/gpu, you stick to it 3 years, knowing that nothing is going to beat it for 3 years, and then a decent upgrade. I know things do not work in this way, because of how the market works, but if pcs were hardware stable as consoles, we would be happier. There is a moment in your life in which you enjoy swapping hardware like crazy, but then it wears out, you just need to switch on the pc to do things or play.
We need/want great software, not faster hardware incrementally.

We don't know, probably not. But maybe at that point the 5800x is the second choice and is more affordable/available?

Nothing wrong with that. It took me forever to jump off the i7-980X. At least 5 years, and even then I still didn't feel I had the need to.

I do see CPU limitations at 1440p with my CPU. So yeah, upgrading would make sense, but yeah... will have to wait and hope the rig stays alive long enough.

If someone has RKL or Zen3 has no reason to upgrade to Alder, i rather wait for Zen3+/Zen4 and see what happens . If someone is on older generations alder lake can be very tempting.

E.xactly. Even 1440p max details shows little improvement. 2700x is fine unless you play very high refresh rate cs go.

There are plenty of three year CPUs that game just fine today.

Unless your chasing fps, which even then depends on the type of gaming you do.

The new Ryzen with 3d cache seems promising but the release of Ryzen4 seems so close to it that i wonder if it´s going to be a decent upgrade for anyone...

If it's a drop-in replacement, it might be an interesting proposition for anyone with a Zen 2 that may be unwilling or unable to replace their entire system. If it performs on par with Alder Lake, it will make for an affordable holdover. I don't see anyone with a Zen 3 upgrading to this though, wouldn't make sense for what most likely is a 10-20% gain. Not with both Zen 4 and Raptor Lake due in Q4.

That said, who knows what the market is going to be like in Q1 2022. For all we know, AL may suffer from limited availability, prohibitive pricing or simply won't deliver on expectations.

Only reason I am thinking about possibly getting Zen3+ is because of work. For gaming my 3900x is moooooore then enough. With 5120x1440 res I am anyway bound by my GPU. And well if game needs fps I get enough anyway on this.

It makes more sense to use that 3900x for work and get a zen+ cpu for gaming.

Nah I was thinking about going for 64gigs of ram also. And 16-core one. Virtualizing you know.

Depending on pricing and compatibility, I may have to pickup one or 2 of these Zen3+ chips.....
