I hope they did something about the performance drops when enabled

Today is the 13th isn't it? I know it's in California but APU has already been going on for 2 days. I'm not complaining, I'm just excited because we should hopefully hear how well Mantle works today with some real world stats.
I could so nearly play Tomb Raider with everything including TressFX on a 7850. Hopefully TressFX 2 means even better optimization. Given what's actually being done, I'm impressed it doesn't give more of a performance hit. It is friggen hair simulation after all.
On another note, Bullet 3 is also being announced. Its a pretty great physics SDK and I am sad its not used more. Only games I know of are Trials 2 and the RAGE engine (by rockstar, not the game rage).

Cool news. I never understood the complaints about performance hit with TressFX, I was able to run Tomb Raider on pretty much max settings (minus anti-aliasing maxed out) on a 7950, TressFX looked great and I had solid frame rates. Maybe just didn't work well for nVidia cards?

Umm she had it in a pony tail lol, around 10 strands were loose haha
but sure the more fur, nice grass and fancy hairstyles the better.

I believe something like a 7950 could render it nicely at that level of quality, but I played the game on a gtx 560 and tressfx was a no-go. someone above said he ran it at almost max on a 7850, which i really doubt since it's a tad better than my card. and i doubt it's so heavily optimized towards amd cards. although nvidia had their share of problems with tomb raider, driver-wise.

it would really be gay if nvidia/amd would start developing and heavily optimizing their own technology for their own cards. because in time it will be all about the features instead of raw performance or performance/price ratio like it is now.

Or not, you want hairy breasts? xD

I think a lot of people mix TressFx with a generic physics engine. TressFx is only for simulating hair like textures/sprites/geometry. Just like by nvidia, nv hair has a special branch for it and its not physx in general ;)

And imo TombRaider hair is not buggy, its only on nvidia - that hair twitching time to time (benchmark) is actually driver fault. I didnt have that before, it started with newer drivers since r320 or 325+

We took 6 hours to beat Tomb Raider and never looked back. That was so worth it to have shiny hair.

Also, TressFX ran great for me... you just needed a high end AMD GPU or something close to it at the time... I think it may be better now with drivers for NVIDIA and mid range AMD GPUs, but I haven't checked it out in months myself.
