Are you all missing the point here? Consoles are never upgraded. This is just your regular post-release die shrink we've have with every console before, remember the smaller PS3's and PS2's that came out later?

And why wouldn't it be less unique if they added more SP, xbone needs it badly - at least to PS4 level..

Rest is all the same, nothing changed.

    1080p 60fps?

Sony and Microsoft themselves don't even want that.

Would be nice if they added a reserved extra 100mhz or something to the cpu and gpu as a turbo for the times when the frames get choppy, they should keep it reserved but not let devs use it so they can make the gameplay smoother.

I don't see how this could help Nintendo without them building a entirely new console unless they use this to upgrade the GPU in the Wii-U.

For nintendo all it would do is reduce heat and power they could probably cheap out on the psu a bit and if the fab is cheaper it would reduce the overall cost of the system.

i still can not understand why someone would get mad at ms or sony for releasing a newer console which can output better quality lets say 1080p instead of 720p with some scaling bs, instead of taking advantage of this little architecture bump from 28nm to 20nm like apple does to refresh the internals of its popular devices with faster, less power hungry parts they choose to save on costs? jeez, yet nobody is complaining cause their half year old smartphone cant even open a new chat app, tech these days is going mad, we have tiny laptops with twice the resolution of a gaming rig wtf

Because the millions who have already paid money will now be using the crappier one.

It would be pointless anyway, as most devs would just code the game for the first gen consoles to keep parity and save time and money on development costs.

I don't think lazy is fair considering how much more complex games are today. Time to market vs money in the kitty to pay developers salaries is the real factor here. Lazy no.

30fps is more often than not a design choice, the majority of people i speak to would rather better graphics than a better framerate.

There is also the marketing side of things, it's easy to advertise your game on TV or the cinema if your game is throwing out alot of fancy visual effects, but how do you advertise 60fps on a 24fps cinema screen or 25/30fps TV channel?

....You're kidding right? If they were to do this, this would alienate everyone who currently owns a console, as new games would not be able to be ran on an old system due to being designed for the more powerful version. I'm a PC gamer, i'm all for making advancements and fast, but it's obvious that's not what consoles are and if a console company were to do that, it'd be the death of them

Nope, if anyone feels left behind they would buy new improved one and sell old.

The game would still be designed for slower ones, these newer would run it a bit faster is all.

If they cheapen on coolling/psu parts that sounds like it will be worse quality.

These things have only been out for a year and they're already about to do a die shrink...

What I don't like is that there is currently a new version of the PS4 with reduced power phases and other cheapening like all the heat exchanger fins are now the same density - whereas before they were more dense were there was higher pressure from the fan.

These things aren't ever heating in anyway. People shouldn't really care about die shrinks. Only Sony, who's paying to make them should care.

Yeah there is literally no ****ing way they will release a better performing console this generation. Better heat/power consumption maybe (hell, probably) but a faster system? No. These aren't PCs. And frankly it's still relatively early in the cycle, there's still a lot more we're going to see from this generation before it's done.

Nobody loses on the shrinkage. It will save power, reduce the heat and probably help to increase the stability of the machines.

    Lol you're a bit delusional aren't ya?

One of two things would happen, either game developers would only develop for the previous version of the console, or for the new version of the console, not both, so either the extra power wouldn't matter because the game looks just as good on both systems, or original supporters of the console will be SOL. They wouldn't develop for both, as that would be a waste of money, and they wouldn't develop for the "new" console, as that would alienate their customers that have the previous console, and in tern get them less sales.

There is absolutely no way a refresh of current consoles in terms of graphics/processing performance would do any good, it would either do no difference (due to no one developing for the extra performance), or be the death of the console

    It's really, really that simple.

You put "1080P 60FPS" in the advert.

    Not that hard.
