Consider yourself very fortunate that you have no issues with having the AMD PCI Bus driver installed. AMD changed the GPU driver to sideload the component as needed, and it's expected to be using the MS supplied driver in Device Manager. Having the AMD driver installed in Device Manager can cause instability and other odd issues. My laptop system did not like having it installed, not at all. Once I removed it, all my issues went away.

There is no reason to have it installed along with the current gpu drivers, as it's part of the package, and will call it as needed.

Are we talking about the same thing ? AMDKMPFD.sys ? I tried messing with it by deleting it and it installs again on the next reboot. Meh...as long as I don't have any issues with it I will not try to mess with things any further.

My Windows11 (even the retail version) always installs an old amdkmpfd.sys version via Windows Update:
    Win2.jpg

It's enough just to select "Receive updates for other Microsoft products":
    Win1.jpg

Adrenalin never installs the amdkmpfd doesn't matter if I have already installed or not the old version from Windows Update. I can install the newer version from Adrenalin just manually.
On Win10 I think Adrenalin installs it.

Yeah I don't have Win 11 and can't comment on that but on Win 10 that driver is installed with Adrenalin drivers. Can't get rid of it unless you uninstall the video drivers and remain on the microsoft basic display adapter lol.

Yes we are. It IS a pain to get rid of. I wound up using Driver Storage Tool in Safe Mode to get rid of it, also using Device Manager to uninstall every version it finds until it stops and gets stuck on the last one. The issue is getting rid of the copies in the Driver Cache too, and thats where the tool comes in use: getting rid of that last one. safe Mode is the key. Doing it from standard will have WU reinstalling it.

Once done, it won't install, even from WU.

Really? If it somehow gets installed (and usually it happens via default Windows driver installation when you have no driver and reinstall system) it is one simple deletion + reboot... Then it never comes back. Even with unlocked Windows Updates (i only disable autoupdate)

I got news for you... every time I deleted (uninstalled) the driver from Device Manager, and replaced it with the MS one, it kept getting replaced back with either one from cache or an earlier version. It seems the OS was giving preference to the AMD supplied driver, and recovering it. Reboot? It's back.

I had to literally gut it from the system to make it stay away. I believe the other two people in this thread know what I am talking about. If you never had an issue uninstalling the driver, and reverting to MS one, then feel blessed.

This driver is always installed in windows 11 and a rx580 gpu in a clean machine without internet. (i download the driver from a second machine).
I did it for testing propose. I don't know about newer cards and windows 11, but with polaris it always install.

Same happens on W10+Polaris (RX480+B450), after a ddu and no remaining older versions on driver store (so it can revert to MS's "PCI Bus"). It's always installed by default with the amd adrenalin driver package.

In this system (ddu prior to running amd installer), usually it'll only be installed right after the next log in (causing a re-detection of devices), then requiring a second reboot to complete installation (windows warning). Less often, it'll be applied sooner just a bit after the amd installer is closed, needing no extra restart later.

Seem plausible that the installer will behave differently with current RDNA2/3 hardware, given that other packages will differ too (pe., AMDNoiseSupression won't be skipped).

That's why I'm waiting for RDNA3 to be at least 1 year old before jumping in. That's when they typicaly fix almost all of the stuff ;) Legit strat since HD7970.

I guess 23.8.1 will be released on August 25~31? Or the optimized driver will be released on September 6th at the same time as Starfield (AAA).

    23.Q3 already was released.

And they build 23.XX.XX drivers quite frequently with time gaps now and then in between.

So you cannot tie these down to any new release being expected soon enough, unless they actually send build with explicit driver version.

They might as well wait to release new driver until the 7700/7800 comes out, and Starfield.

Maybe they will sneak in FSR 3.
