Over at social media, AMD employees started posting and teasing photos of the new AM5 platform, specifically a detailed photo of a ZEN4-based processor with its unique heat spreader design....

Ugh I very much dislike the lga socket style since my 3770k fused with a pin on p67 board destroying the mobo also it just moves the cost of the pins to the mobo and like Intel we all know they aren't going to drop prices on the cpu

As long as it performs well and disperses its heat quickly I really don't care if it looks like my nether region considering I will be looking at it for a matter of seconds.

You wouldn't see it under the cooler. The problem is thermal pastes.

So it has the same flawed socket design the Intel uses, with the lever on one side

It looks very cool to me, i'm a little afraid of the heat spreader thickness but i guess there is more headroom for those who like to lap their cpus and do a little more extreme stuff

Thickness is good, it spreads the heat better to the entire Heatspreader for a better thermal transfer to the cooler.
Thickness also helps against warped CPUes when using LGA brackets.

I don't really care how it looks like.
Supporting AM4 coolers is actually a great thing.

Look at the mess we have with LGA 1700, could barely find anything for it (including brakets for existing coolers)

it's really necessary 'cuz of the (micro) point-source heating of juiced uArch on a smaller node.
AMD has rarely changed the heatspreader/socket design, but now needs the thermal reserves if "every" AM5 can hit 5GHz. oddly enough the larger the heat source is, the easier the cooling (even including X299) as the area of (contact) thermal transfer allows for radiant cooling effects (until saturation) at closer to a 1:1 ratio.
this will be very interesting for Meteor Lake, but ML will be a huge improvement in reversing Intel's slide to ever greater tdps...so actually the heatspreader on RL is the "state of Intel's art" and has an even higher thermal reserve than the Zen4 heatspreader. but has not had to deal with cooling the 7nm or below nodes until now.

It looks like I should be able to use my Asus Arctic Square, which I've had since socket 939 and was compatible with 754 and 775. I don't use all of the mounting hardware that the heatsink comes with for AM4 but I haven't needed it anyway. Crazy how a cooler can have about 20 years worth of compatibility, though honestly, it's kinda stupid how compatibility for mainstream CPUs ever breaks in the first place.

"What it looks like" has always been the province of Mac users...who value superficiality far more than substance...;) To quote tty8k, who cares what the darned thing looks like?...;) It sits under a heat-sink, remember. The CPU is form following function, which is A-OK with me.

This thing that will be immediately covered up by a cooler, never to be seen again until obsolete, placed in a bin.... Just look at it. It looks so much better than I remember mine looking. I must have it.

Waiting for someone to try out liquid metal and short out the CPU and motherboard. Not a fan of the open solder joints.
