DirectX 12 Ultimate is a much better name than 12.1 and 12.2 etc. Now if we can just have like 3-4 iterations so we can have DirectX 12 Super Ultimate RGB Platinum.

EDIT: This was complete sarcasm making fun of the silly name and the fact MS would never go past a .2 iteration so they could increase the main number cause bigger is better.

Microsoft forgot how to name things apparently. Xbox Series X and now this.

That said I'm excited all this stuff is being ratified into DX - mesh shaders should be super interesting when games start using them. VRS is basically a free performance boost when implemented correctly. RT - nearly two years ago most people said it wouldn't last a generation but now AMD supports it, consoles are going to have it (with 2080 levels of performance) it's being experimented with in sound and it's getting more performant through software optimization and collaboration.

Name is bad but it seems like a great update.

I still don't know if you're ironic or not xd
I'll much rather prefer 12.1. It's sad that I almost NEVER saw DX11.1 11.2 11.3 and even 11.4 games (do they even exist?)
Also, GPU-Z is listing DX 11.5 too. yey

Thank god they were able to bring this to both AMD and Nvidia for graphics purposes. Would hate to see two different APIs become a necessity (dx12 and Vulkan), where devs would choose to which company they want to partner up with to make it work again... I hope it won't be like with many other things running better or worse on competitive companies.

    That said, RTX 20 generation dx12.x, RTX 30 generation DX12 Ultimate? :D

No, RTX 20 series already supports DX12 Ultimate. AMD still needs to catch up with RDNA2.

It's 12_2 internally and for developers.

12 Ultimate is for the brogamers..... you can spot one in the thread.

VRS for me sounds like the most exciting thing, one day i'm sure they will have some form of eye tracking watching where you are looking on the screen and changing the resolution per block based on where you are looking. I think that would be the best format of it rather than a set one. No idea how hard that could be to implement mind you, but it interests me, specially for weaker system, though at that point even high end could have it... just having 8k where you are looking then 2-4k the further out of vision it is would be great for performance

"Ultimate" is still better anything they will invent for an imaginary future 12_3 feature level

LOL yeah the entire post was tongue in cheek. Changing to these silly names instead of versions but I was also poking fun that they never did many dot releases so MS could make the number bigger.

I'm not interested in DirectX 12 Ultimate.... what I really want is DirectX 12 Ultra.

Honestly wondering if DirectX 13 will ever be a reality........ because of the number 13.

No, current AMD GPUs lacks of ray-tracing support, so no d3d_feature_level_12_2 (which is the technical requirement for the "DirectX 12 Ultimate" logo)

Calling it DX12.1 wouldn't work as my 980 has support for DX12.1 but it won't support DX12U.

They're having issues implementing the RGB, so next iteration will simply be "Direct X 12 Super Ultimate Platinum". DirectX 13 will be renamed to "DirectX Super Ultimate Patinum Limited Ultra RGB" though....cuz they're sure they can get the RGB working by then.

Oh Lord sorry but was I the only one that rolled their eyes when they saw "DX 12 Ultimate"? Will it accompany pictures of Mountain Dew as well?

Perhaps I don't understand your post. (I could be insane, after all.) I don't believe a developer choosing between DirectX or Vulkan has ever necessitated them "throwing in" specifically with one GPU manufacturer over another.

The problem with DirectX 12 Ultimate as I see it is that it's one more tether to Microsoft, either through Windows and/or the Xbox. I'd personally prefer to see Vulkan receive as much development and distribution as possible. An API that will run on pretty much every imaginable graphics platform, with no one corporation at the controls, seems best to me. But, I would want DirectX to hang on, too, to keep the Khronos Group focused.

As a consumer, If I had a choose a game with DX12 or Vulkan. I'd always pick the second one.

We should let the Microsoft Windows/XBOX DirectX rest in peace
