^ ok, the device ID specific way should be a sure thing. Should.

For curiosity I checked my system for the registry value given as the last resort and it was set to 0 readily indeed.
I haven't changed it myself so something else has, check to see whether it is set to 1 for you atm.

Though I've understood GPE is the most powerful tool and often works when registry hacks don't.

No matter what I do the update for the GPU will never show up in the list for the tool to hide updates, but after locking the Hardware ID through GPE I've already seen 6 Windows logs regarding WU trying to install the driver and failing. GPUZ still says I'm on 15.7.1, and if this works I will learn to not care about the extra logs about failures. Wish me luck!

    Hope it keeps working!

For curiosity's sake I installed Cat 15.7.1 myself and sure enough, WU tried to install an AMD driver update for R9 200 series! Checked GPE and registry and everything was as before (disabled).

However, I was able to hide the update with the tool and now it's gone, did show up on the list for updates to hide for me.

Not really sure what's going on though, did the TH2 upgrade break the possibility to stop driver updates via GPE or what...
or is this Crimson software bypassing even Windows now!

PS: when using driver versions higher than 15.7.1 I've never gotten a driver update via WU.
So if you update to latest Cat 15.11.1 betas they should stick too. Contain some stability and perf improvements over 15.7.1.

edit: yup, reinstalled 15.11.1 betas and no more driver updates pushed through WU (the hiding tool doesn't show it anymore either).

Just got back and turned on my computer. GPUZ still says I'm on 15.7.1 so I'm going to eat dinner and watch a show, then try some Fallout 4.

@AsiJu, interesting story about your little test. Good to know I'm not alone in this stupid situation. As far as the usefulness of the hiding of updates for hardware, it doesn't seem that useful because as soon as the next one comes out I would be in the same boat of having 15.7.1 (or whatever driver I'm on) overwritten without my consent or knowledge.

Anyway, I would also like to be on 15.11.1, but I play Fallout 4 so slowly and methodically that having the compass corruption all but ruins the game play for me. Also, the Shadow of Mordor corruption makes that game unenjoyable to a much greater extent. I'll update later! Thanks so much for the help and ideas so far.

Catalyst 15.11.1 betas, not Crimson ;)

I get the corruption too with Crimson, won't use it until it's fixed and matured a bit.

Whew, just finished about 3 straight hours of Fallout 4. No black screens, no driver overwrites, just the typical terrible performance of the ancient engine with nVidia tessellated godrays on AMD hardware. That was fun!

So are the Crimson 15.11.1 drivers different from the Catalyst 15.11.1 drivers? Or are you saying the having Radeon Settings installed is causing the compass corruption? If I could move up to 15.11.1 non Crimson and play Fallout 4 I might do that soon.

Yes Catalyst drivers are the previous AMD drivers and the Radeon Software Crimson Edition is the brand new driver.
They use the same version numbering (year and month of release) so a bit confusing.

Grab latest Cat betas from here:

    http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/amd-catalyst-15-11-1-beta-driver-download.html

it does indeed contain perf improvements for FO4.

So Catalyst drivers were replaced by Radeon Software starting from November. From now on the AMD drivers will be called Radeon Software and the current generation is the Crimson Edition.
Just hoping AMD gets the Crimson driver sorted before the latest Catalysts become very obsolete... especially if WU keeps forcing the driver for some like this.

Actually I'm thinking AMD re-released the Crimson hotfix driver as WHQL 15.12 just so they could push it to WU.
While I understand that to some extent, I think there should be an extra tag there which will offer (=force) the driver to only those still using the initial Crimson driver.

Catalyst users should be left alone as they are most likely using Cats on purpose. Not to mention mixing Crimson driver with Catalyst package is a certain way of messing things up.

The whole WU driver install way is bs like you saw, it just overwrites the current driver and expects things to work.
You'd think MS would know better by now...

I just installed the Catalyst 15.11.1 drivers and I'm off to play F4 and SoM. You said that you have no corruption on these drivers, right AsiJu?

As far as Win10 overwriting my drivers, the GPE hardware ID restriction seems to have that under control. Will report back later.

It could have to do with the Crimson drivers reporting Catalyst 15.8.

No corruption with Cats whatsoever, playing SoM myself atm :)

    Possibly so.

So the 15.11.1 Cat's work great so far! You were not kidding about them being awesome. I see myself keeping them for many months. I was able to turn both F4 and SoM up from all high settings to all Ultra and both games still run more smoothly! I was being forced to use VATS because of the game going down to around 10FPS whenever I zoomed in with any scope, but that has obviously been fixed.

Back to the actual namesake of the thread, I tried the Crimson Hotfix and came to the conclusion that you should probably not use it yet. Huge thanks to AsiJu and all who helped. I am contributing to your nonexistent reputation, for whatever it's worth. :)

Glad I could help! Yea SoM runs very well on AMD hardware with the right driver.

I had it maxed out at first but once I left Udun (to whatever that next place was called with lot of foliage) I had to drop foliage range to High to keep locked 60 fps.

I also disabled Order-Independent Transparency as it seemed to cause hickups in certain areas (probably a Gamesworks feature or something) and I can't really see any difference in IQ.
