I always assumed the 6970 was the dual GPU replacement for the 5970, is that not the case?

No that will be known as the 6990; at least that's what 95% of the rumours going around are saying.

No, that's not. 6970 (Cayman) is the single GPU which, according to leaked benches, is the replacement for 5970 performance-wise. Dual 6xxx gpu solution is codenamed Antilles and comes with 6990 branding.

It would make more sense if they went back to 6970 X2

^^ Is it def two 6970's on one PCB then?

Could be looking at two 8 Pin PCI Express Connectors on that mother f

Whoops, I can see 2-crossfire fingers. If they keep the Crossfire performance's from HD6800 series, imagine what HD6900 can do in tri or quad crossfire. Looking forward for the review of this card ;)

why not overlap two PCBs one on top of the other instead of making the card 1 meter long?

6990 will be 2 x 6950...6970 is on it's own league... :) so, 2 x 6970 it's the monsters combo...if you have enough space...or else 6990 will be good for trifire/quadfire...but i dont like one pcb two gpus...it has degraded gpu's inside...get a good mobo a big case...and get the whole one piece...not the dual one...

Unfortunately its gotten to the stage that power usage resriction maked it unable for the dual GPU card to use x2 of the top single GPU.

I'm sure this may change when 28nm appears, but at the moment that certainly isn't the case.
