Interesting, wonder if they are holding to the bios deciding if they can bump up the cores further than planned to knock out the GTX580.

I fear there will be very little OC headroom left. I hope they don't stick the poor clocking chips on the lower clocked 6990 that didnt cut it for the 6970.

The 6990 like 5970 better be overclocking monster as I have no interest in the 300W TDP crap.

lol, well if they do plan to stick two 6970 chips on there, given that the 6970 is supposed to draw at least 225w, i'd say theyre gonna be heavily underclocked to fit on a 6990.

so the downside is that it probably wont be as fast as two 6950s in crossfire.

the upside is that since theyre 6970s, they should be able to handle 6970 clocks as long as they have sufficient power, so they might get advertised as awesome overclockers since they can go up to 6970 clocks from the base clock.

but from whatever angle you look at it, its gonna be better to get a pair of 6970s.

Thats what I'm thinking too, but I don't feel like buying a new mobo/system to run 2 cards so I rather stick to a single card.

I really hope they design the 6990 like you say, downclocked heavilly to meet the 300w limit and be designed from the get go to be overclocked back to 6970 speeds and come with a official overclocking tool again and have headroom to reach 950 core at the minumum. x2 8 pin power sockets a must.

If not then I see no reason to upgrade from a 5970 that runs 950/1200 speeds no problem.

No information about that particular chip.
