I guess the Mantle update for Battlefield 4 has been postponed.

Still, I'm extremely interested in Mantle and I hope it takes off to put pressure on Microsoft.
The best that could come out of all this is Microsoft greatly improving D3D.

    Regarding possible performance gains :

Not bad at all....An it's still in alpha stage.

its not insignificant really, people may not even know they want direct x but if support dropped for it windows sales would take a hit.

There were something like 20,000 entities, each with it's own separate AI. Even then the frametime looked like it was in the single digits (I couldn't read it).

    That is crazy. :3eyes:

    What APU/CPU did they use?

The game footage was by far the most boring part of that video, impressive technically but nothing happened.
I'm not hugely tech minded but the tech info was very interesting.

Looking forward to Mantle anyway, worst case scenario it dies and goes away, best case MS is forced to improve DX.

8350 mate, probably at stock to be honest.

He even stated in part of the video that he DOWNCLOCKED the CPU by 2GHz and was still getting more or less the same results and the CPU was not even bottlenecking the GPU or the application in anyway!

Yup, not bottleneck by the DirectX API overhead on CPU, means more effect/performance for Game Engine.

I guess the true test will be bf4 when it gets released. I'd like to see what kind of improvements I can get with the 7970

What would happen if Mantle becomes available for SteamOS....

*starts pondering about an amazing world that does not yet exist*

Knowing how much AMD "loves" unix, that will take a while.

Have they mentioned what Mantle Will run under? Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Windows Vista.... XP even?

Just wondering seeing as they said Mantle can do the same types of effects that DirectX can do without using DirectX.. Which led me to wonder what it will run under.

Mantle just seems so interesting in that they will no longer be shackled by Microsoft.

    I don't think they have, i can't find anything.

Likely just Vista imo, maybe even 7 onwards, not because of technical reasons but just to minimise work.

That is why i also don't believe it will get SteamOS support anytime soon, not forgetting that Valve and Nvidia have likely did alot of work on OpenGL so might be resistant to it.

forget xp, wont happen. wdm doesnt support user mode in xp.

They have said it will have multiplatform support, that means osx and linux basically.

just a matter of how long.

they have been adding to the linux repository lately, so that something...
