    AMD-HD-970?
(I guess the original with that R9 thing would be 9th Generation and then the 9 series and 70 model or some such, thus r9-970, it kinda works as well)

'HD-NG' is too mouthful, and 'UHD' will make them sound like used car salesmen.

Although I don't get why they had the need to change the naming scheme for their GPU line (that, IMO, serves as a differentiator from their CPU-related products), R9-XXXX makes sense.
Like Lane said, AMD have E for embedded, A for APU, so why not R for Radeon?
R9 probably means Radeon series 9, and that actually identifies the series as concise as possible compared to HD 9000.

    An unneeded change? Probably.
But an entirely confusing one? Nope, unless someone's really THAT thick.

I think what confusing is how the article have no concrete detail on the new naming scheme yet trying to make a news out of it by guessing on the new naming scheme with few 'rather redundant example'.

If they have the names, wonder if they have the specs as well ;)

That naming scheme reminds me of nVidia's Geforce 200 series.

    .. gtx260, 275, 280, 285, 295.

Are those names not the cores (like GK104 is Nv's 680), so for example, the R9 285, will be the 9970 ?

From another chart ive seen (on a site blocked here), it seems to be a decent performance increase, as it shows the 9 series midrange card (the 7850/70 of the 7 series), will be 7970 performance :)

Also looks like the namings confirmed, judging by the download section of the HIS Digital site :-

    http://www.hisdigital.com/un/download.shtml

EDIT: Judging by that on the HIS site, it looks like the cards are actually going to be called the 290/285 etc..., which if so, then id have to agree, is stupid. :p

Just name them slower than gtx 780 asfast as gtx 780 and the top card faster than gtx 780 then everyone will know whats what.

New naming scheme is simple and smart, it will be adopted really quickly.
    (Remember 9800GTX < GTX280).

    Change is good. :)

Thinking about it, they could call the 9970 the big bollox 5000 for all i care, as the performance means more to me than the name :D

    Wow. Naming style not bad.
But hope it outperforms 7970hd by 25%.

It's all speculation at this stage, despite speculate being in fact, early assumptions. Basically meaning nothing more than pure guesswork based on the lack of credible information.

I think it will have 48ROPs, but SP is still a secret lol, would be great if 2560.

    Cool and about time :)

Will you upgrade your 7970 to R9-280?

Depends on the price/performance, but saying that, i like new things, so i probably would, and ive had my 7970 since release, so its been a long time, even though theres nothing wrong with it, its still doing the business :p

Just seem to get that itch :D
