Smaller and cheaper version of the W9100, but good thing it keep the DP rate at 1/2.. Allready a monster in DP performance. ( 2.1 Tflops DP vs the 2.62Tflops DP for the W9100.. )

More reasonably TDP as well, hopefully won't sound like a hairdryer.

Not really the case of the W9100.. TDP is not calculated the same of gaming card anyway. Its a 4000$ card.. not a 600$ gaming gpu .

The older W9000 who was based on Thaiti 7970 show 274W .. but well the 7970 have never been rated at 275W ...

The W8100, as the W9100 are mostly sold on 4 GPU's system. ( i let you imagine what numbers drain 4 of them in a computer workstations ( pricey too )...

Too bad that AMD have not set the 290x with the 1/2 DP rates ..anyway, im curious to see the S9150 ..

"Not really the case of the W9100.. TDP is not calculated the same of gaming card anyway. Its a 4000$ card.. not a 600$ gaming gpu ." Well most people talked about the GTX Titan only as an overpriced gaming card when in reality it was also a cheap card for professional use.

useless for a gaming video card

about the heat, most card are with better disipation than regular one, (there is still some single slot card).
also the vent is "generaly" more reliable and silent...
    of course the price...

Thats true, but before the 290x ( who still have good decent DP performance anyway, specially compared to the competition ), AMD was keep the same DP rate for professional and non professional gpu ( 1/4 ), like on the HD 7970..

When Nvidia add specific ALU, the FP64 units, in each SMX for the DP operation, AMD use cores / ALU ( + a scalar unit for each 16 ALU ) who are able to do both FP32 and FP64 operations. So on Nvidia this is driven by the simple thing: They disable or remove the FP64units ( removed like on GK104, and disabled, like on GK110 780-780TI )... On this sense Maxwell is allready closer to AMD GCN than Kepler on how FP64 instructions are implemented hardware wise, the next architecture will be it seems even closer.

So for AMD this is just a question of what is allowed or not on the gpu.

The difference being, the Titan was marketed to gamers. That's where most of the fuss comes from, I wouldn't recommend a Titan for a gaming build but I can most definitely see why some people buy them.

The titan is a gaming gpu.. its not because they have unlock the possibility to run better DP performance ( note, you need to switch in DP mode ), that it is a professionnal card.. outside the DP performance, this card has absolutely none of professional features you can find on workstations, server, HPC gpu's.... It is not compatible with professional series drivers, all the features software and hardware you can find on a workstation / server type gpu's, instructions, codes, error checks, QA, controls, specific input / output needed etc are absolutely not present.

Before we had Gaming gpu's who had the same ability in hardware of doing DP .. today the gaming gpu's, because it is not needed are indeed locked on this side.. Nvidia have got the idea to release a version with it, but thats just a 780 with full FP64 unit enabled instead of disabled ... its not a Quadro K6000, Tesla tuned down.

This will be totally misleading to sold a Titan or a 7970 - 290x as Professional card for both AMD and Nvidia, when thoses cards are not.
( i put both of thoses gpu of AMD, as the 7970 is the exact same SP/DP performance of a W9000 ( even faster ), and the 290x is just cutted at 1/8DP ( but still an extreme capable computing card compared to the 780TI )

What do a difference between a professional gpu and a "gaming gpu".. is not only the price, the quality of the tests on it, and high binned chips. but professional gpu's pack an high amount of hardware and softwares features, connection and compatibility with the workstations, servers, eco-system who are absolutely not ready to do his way on the main consumers markets.

( Just for clarify, i dont say that Titan or other gpu gaming, will not do an excellent work on 3Dmaxs, Blender, Adobe CC etc, and cant be used for it, all you need for thoses softwares is an good CPU ( mostly 1 -2 cpu 6-8cores will be better ), an high amount of system memory, an averagely good graphics acceleration for display what you are creating and the acceleration capability of OpenCL or CUDA for the render ( in real time or for the final renders backed.. ).
