    The hardware is very good.
I have 2 of the exact same Asus card, the main problems have been drivers not supporting features and graphic anomalies.
My cards overclock very well too even in crossfire.
(oops, I have the basic 5770 with egg shape cooler, not the CU core. but this means the hardware is even more capable given my cooler isnt as good as the CU core!)

If it is his memory he will probably want to find why, unless he is happy to live with it downclocked.

As other have said, it might be just the card being defective.
It's likely a hardware problem, but that doesn't mean all 5770 cards are prone to this failure.

I have an XFX 5770 and it still serves me well.
Never had any grey screen nor even BSOD with it, unless when my CPU OC went titsup.

The HD5770 i used over a year had only one hiccup. BSOD after a beta driver update, rolled back to the WHQLs and worked perfectly, so, no gray screen for me.

The card might not even be defective if slowing the memory down works.
If I can get the op (+friend) to do any tests, it might reveal something useful.

Never had an ounce of bother with my 5770, sold it to a friend and he suddenly had massive problems

I have a Sapphire HD5770 VX in my old AM2 5200+ build, I had no problem with it and gamed nicely with it. Since building a new rig, I have lent it to my bro who uses it for surfing, watching streaming movies and such, as well as some productivity work. Believe me, if he has any problem with it, I would be the first to know about it.

Have run two XFX 5770's for two years.

    Best cards have owned.
But Sold as soon as 4gig 680 comes out.
Hope the 680's Perform and Scale as good as the 5770's do.

tell your friend to go check for an BIOS update for his video card

I used to have this problem flashed the bios with a later one and it's not been a problem since

mostly the GSOD/BSOD is caused when going from low power idle clocks/voltage to 3d clocks/voltage

the bios I have installed allows the low clocks but doesn't lower the volts so instead of getting an idle clock/voltage of 157/300MHz @ 1.0V or .9V I get 157/300MHz @ 1.2V

aH well there's one big problem right there 70c is bloody high for that gpu. Even folding on mine neither go over 52c he's got a very hot case if that's what he's getting and furmark gets them to 57c with 100% fan speed

I had an Asus cucore 5770 and I could not touch the memory speeds at all, core ran @ 900mhz all day every day but memory could not run above stock(1200mhz I think) or else I would always get "driver stopped responding" within 5 to 10 minutes and all temps were fine.
