AMD confirms its Ryzen CPU will launch in early March followed by the Vega GPU

AMD’s eagerly-awaited Ryzen processor will launch in early March, according to AMD chief executive Lisa Su. Su specified the target date during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call Tuesday afternoon.

“There will be widespread system availability from day one,” Su said during the call. Channel vendors will receive the first Ryzen chips, along with system integrators. More traditional hardware vendors will come later, Su added.

That statement implies that vendors like Dell or HP (neither of which have been officially confirmed to be using the Ryzen chip) will be asked to wait, while AMD caters to boutique PC vendors. Ryzen will take on Intel’s highest-end Core chips, specifically the Core i5 and Core i7 processors, Su said.

Su’s comments seemingly back up what a Game Developers Conference presentation revealed earlier: that Ryzen would launch before March 3. What’s new, though, is a Vega timetable: Su revealed that the Vega GPUs will ship during the second quarter as well. In the second half of 2017, AMD still plans to launch a Zen-based APU, codenamed “Raven Ridge,” primarily designed for notebooks but also some desktops

Finally we have some more accurate info on the release date. Not long to wait until it's available on the shelves everywhere .

Hold on tight , Ryzen is coming in a few weeks ( launch before March 3 )

 

I wonder when it's going to launch because my busted a$$ PC can't handle much more. I had it open one day and running next I know a fan isn't working and the cat was a little hurt so i'm gonna assume she was playing in it and messed something up. Now it's hit or miss if it will actually boot up. Not a clue what it could be... just holding for Zen... holding... holding.....

So it should be here in a month tops, we should be seeing full specs, clock speeds and core counts within 2 weeks? And maybe reviewers will get samples to test before the end of February.

 

The sooner the better, I can't hold off too much longer to build another rig.

This is a little ominous. While it might be great for AMD if they have a competitive 8 core CPU priced at $800, it's hardly going to have the disruptive influence we all hope it will. "High end" is admittedly very vague, and I hope I'm reading too much into this, but it *might* suggest higher pricing on Ryzen than we're all hoping for.

 

I disagree, I've been holding off building a highend workstation rig. If I can get more bang for the buck with AMD, count me in! A shame they don't show any plans for dual socket ryzen cpus. Will have to content with 8 cores for now. $1000/cpu from Intel is a joke...they're just greedy!

If it costs more then kaby lake then there's no point,won't make a dent in Intel's sales revenue.I need a new setup as well and March is perfect launch date,I was looking into kaby lake as my next upgrade I need one desperately! This fx 8 core not so good for gaming to be honest.

 

I will wait on benches and then decide, plus I need good board with at least 10 SATA ports

Right now have i7-5820k and getting i7-5960x not sure, cost too much for my liking and 6950x is just obscene expensive

I have the fx 8350 and i'm very satisfied with it. Maybe you have core parking active? you have to disable it if it is enabled, to get max performance.
Or why you say is not so good?

 

I´m itching for a new build so i must control myself...

I´m waiting for Zen to be released before i decide between Intel or AMD but the wait is killing me...

C´mon AMD, release the damn thing!!!

Or give us some leaked benches of the final product so we can decide for ourselfes...

Dual socket for anything that isn't a server has been obsoleted a long time ago. It was useful back in the days before GPGPU tasks and when there weren't quad cores with HT. There aren't really any CPU-bound workstation tasks these days that demand more than 16 threads while also not capable of offloading/dividing the work to other PCs in something like a render farm.

I must disagree, dual socket motherboard still have space on market, although Intel killed that by not allowing i7 or i5 to be used on these boards in dual CPU configuration and due this no allowing them to OC, last good OC dual socket motherboard has been SR2 from EVGA which allowed people to use Xeon CPU and OC them although no i7 or i5

Some task you can do on GPGPU, but not every one, same can apply to rendering, some rendering SW doesn't support GPU rendering

I disagree with there aren't really any CPU bound workstation tasks, you are not used probably for while some SW which use multiple cores, I've used E5-2683v3 which 14c/28t CPU and have used that chip mostly for rendering and for production works etc, my i7-5820k is fast enough but in some tasks E5-2683v3 has been lot better than i7

If prices will be good enough I will go too with dual socket board

Like I said, there isn't much of a purpose for multi-socket workstations, but there is plenty of highly relevant uses for multi-socket servers, even if it's just a small one next to your workstation. Though I understand what you're saying, a lot of what you're referring to could easily be offloaded to server(s). If your application is not able to offload processing power to a separate PC, I would find that application very questionable. I'm not aware of any serious applications that use more than 16 threads and cannot offload calculations to another computer.


Generally, you don't want to be doing any serious rendering or calculations on your workstation; you want to offload it to something else. Assuming the work you're doing is important, you don't want heavy calculations slowing down your workflow and you don't want to risk anything crashing. So, getting a separate rendering server is usually the best bet.

 

So march I can finally ditch this mess of a pc. Goodie.
