Its a peak power. If we look at that way 12900k pulls 300w.

Well this statement explains better the boost between 5.2 and 5.5ghz across multiple cores for a longer time period :) i was not able to understand how this was done with 170w max power but maybe the reason for that is a leak of my knowhow and expirience :)

I don't like the direction they're heading with the power usage, but it's *STILL* lower power than intel (16 full cores vs. 8 full and 8 mini ones), and probably a good chunk faster. Price will tell, I guess! (and how long the silicon can last under those conditions)

So, okn higher tier CPU, the PBO can set the clocks and proportional the power consumption up to that amount?

Achieving this is no small feature

Honestly, I'm just really curious to see how @Hilbert Hagedoorn tests them, and with what methodology and hardware. It's tricky to do anyway, since it seems like a feature highly dependant on cooling, which is NEVER the same for any two rigs.

    Results may vary.

One of the most miss quoted and miss understood areas of PC usage, when people quote hardware temps without context of room, case, coolant and general ambient temps, and lets not forget room humidity plays a huge part.
No two rigs in no two rooms on no two days is maybe more accurate

Will there be 65w chips or are all of them expected to be heaters for the winter?

Robert Hallock, from AMD, said this in a recent interview.

Peak power at stock settings =230w for Ryzen 7000 ;)

Overclocked by me, it will pull way more

    Stay tuned

Again, disappointed on the direction AMD is going plus hiding the real info from the announcements to look good.
We need more efficient hardware, not this +200W monsters...
I'll stick to under 100W CPUs thank you.

    I agree.

AMD and others should be pushing for more efficient, not the other way around.

But as long as they offer more sensible parts, no problem.

But i´ve read some "disturbing" stuff about a piece of hardware that spies on it´s users and can`t be turned off, i hope Hilbert and others look at this carefully.

Don't think I've ever seen the term PPW used, but I like it. What I don't like is the number. If the PPT was 170 I'd be a lot more excited.

In any case, I don't plan to get one of these super high-end CPUs, so, such numbers likely won't affect me. After finding out my old X370 board now supports the 5000 series, I'm heavily considering just getting a 5800X3D. Honestly, maybe even a 5700X. It really just comes down to how much better 7000 will be.

Then buy the cheap ones ;)

I need +200w monsters, so talk for yourself :D

and even i dont really need it or could not live without since my current setup is also really nice - i just would love to do this... put my hands on that silicom (not that silicon... :D) take it for a very hot ride reaching maximum performance while trying to stay as cold as possible with some water custom loop...
^ and i need to admit it IS def. a HUGE problem if you do all of this with a passion... Even you DO NOT need something - we will always find a reason why we still need it :D hahah!

Nizzen: I totally understand you! :D

I don't think anybody here would balk at the idea of overclocking a CPU to +200W. If anything, I would hope it can be pushed well beyond 230W. We're all enthusiasts so that's just kinda expected. The problem is whether the stock configuration uses that much. Even as a hardcore overclocker, maximizing efficiency matters, because generally speaking, a more efficient CPU has more OC headroom.

Honestly never had much issue with power decade ago... that being said most parts tended to use less power anyway... think 2700k and 7970 were about 65w and 250w

but with how expensive power is becoming in the world, it really makes you want lower watt parts... reason they dont wan't to do it is because it goes back to slow gains 5% year on year... can't have bigger gains without throwing power at it :D

kinda looking forward to my steam deck honestly.... 20w machine cost almost nothing to run :D

Having a high peak max socket power doesn't mean much other than you may have some extra overclocking headroom. People are reading too much into this at least for now. They are not saying they have a chip that will pull 230w.
