AMD's focus for the start of this year has been on explaining the virtues of Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) and driving up gaming interest with the impressive Never Settle bundle, available for most mainstream and high-end Radeon cards.

With attention directed elsewhere, AMD's beleaguered FX processors have, it seems, been consigned to the ash heap of history. These chips do without the baked-in graphics present on APUs and, while perfectly reasonable in their own right, are overshadowed by Intel's third-generation Core 'Ivy Bridge' processors.

So how about this as a rumour for a Friday morning? Though AMD will never go on record and confirm this, we have it on good authority that the chip-maker will soon be releasing a super-FX chip. Based on the same 'Vishera' architecture powering the current FX-8350, which runs at up to 4.2GHz, this new FX, codenamed 'Centurion', is to be made available in very limited quantities.

This so-called Centurion is guaranteed to run at 5GHz, on air, though we don't know exactly what voltage or supporting hardware will be required for this lofty speed.
Here's the kicker; our sources indicate that this limited-edition chip is set to cost a whopping $795 - this is not a typo! Yup, back to the pricing of FX chips of old.

For that price, I would assume these are a rebranded server part, or something similar. No way it has just 8 cores for 800 dollars, even if it does do 5Ghz.

Even AMD has once or twice (can't really remember) priced their top-of-the-line consumer desktop CPUs upward to the $999 mark, and yet some people are still convinced it's (only) Intel who'd price their CPUs through the roof.

But hey, at least it's now about $200 cheaper for their top-of-the-line!

For AMD to make such a price point, this must be mistaken as a server CPU. If not, then this means they finally beat Intel in just about every test (except power efficiency, I think we all know a 5GHz AMD at a higher fab size is not going to be more power efficient than any modern Intel CPU).

    Cool name though - Centurion.

That was there fastest cpu at the time.
had a Asus Crosshair(1st gen)(think i'd pay 260-70usd for that) and 2 gb of corsair ddr2(4-4-4-12) for $315usd at the time.....Gosh looking back things are really cheap now lol

    AMD only rising the clock

    another chrap

probably downclocking to 3.2 will be slower than a PX6

    mine 3770k @ 4.6ghz still much faster

Could be either cherry-picked FX-8350s or a new chip, hopefully the latter.

AMD is tight on money and would likely pull a move like that, but I don't think they'd put such a huge price point on it.

Also, does anyone know if the FX8350s are able to run stable on air at 5GHz? Without a pricey heatsink?

Yeah. i5-2500K is still faster than new CPU AMD ($795) for each core used.

    You don't say.

You also have to keep in mind that you probably hadn't taken inflation into account with that USD710 price tag. :p

Will be a disaster if it comes with same vishera architecture.
    Better be different.

Maybe just maybe it will use Jaugar approach with 8 separate modules so total of real 8 threads, now this would really kick some serious ass, even in single threaded apps.

Eh, I like that you take half news as granted that this CPU will exist, but at the same time you cannot accept that it will be based on the same architecture. xD :)

Anyway I can't see any reason that this cpu would be better than a 4770k or 4930k. I believe it will be inferior and more expensive, it's AMD for God's shake. I think the good old days of AMD FX a decade ago have well passed away. :pc1:

Another AMD chip for everyone to hype up, just to watch it fall on it's face in front of a Intel chip.

u really made that your first post...

anyways all I would hope for is that the price reflects the performance aka it better be better tehn a 600 Intel

    I have an 8350,normally running at 4ghz.
Sometime ago I decided to see how high it would go,so I cranked it up in steps and reached 5ghz.Only mod was,I had to step up vcore to make it run stable.Cooler is a Zalman I think 9500?All copper fins and cpu base also copper. Is running on Artic Silver 5.
To answer your question, yes it will run at 5ghz.I just don't see the need to do so.
