Hey guys, I am one of the many who have had this %99 gpu bug and have posted how I solved it elsewhere but I will give the instruction's that worked for me here...

First off I have been using PC's since the dawn on PC's I have invested alot of time and money in hardware and software all the while learning along the way.

This 99% problem is something that crops up time to time either when I was watching video's or playing certain games. I have been reading alot of posts here about it, some of you have great theories on whats causing it but none have pinpointed it.

Gathering past knowledge from all of you, I decided to take matter's in to my own hands.
now with a ton of $$ invested in this system and my 5970 I really wanted this problem fixed.

based on a few posts I have read I decided to do a custom install and only choose the components from various drivers that I thought were clear of this problem..

    My choices were

    1. First uninstall all AMD software, I use 3 methods to uninstall, 1st i use CCC custom uninstall, then I use ccleaner and remove ATI microsoft visual c ++ which is not uninstalled as part of the CCC or driversweeper, then I use driver sweeper. reboot and use driver sweeper agian, don't reboot but go to next step

    2. now using the custom install option install the 11.2 drivers or 11.4 preview except UN CHECK THE AMD DRAG & DROP AND AVIVO. dont reboot yet

    3. now using the custom install option, install the 10.10e Avivo and AMD drag and drop

I have been running on this configuration for several days so far no gpu bug..

I cant provide drivers, you have to make your own the way I just instructed you to do... thanks and I hope I never see this problem again......

As stated many times... turning off the mouse shadow does not fix the issue from occurring in-game... and it doesn't completely get rid of it on the desktop either... just hides it well... If AMD was an actual company, they would care about the issue and get if fixed...

    pardon me for my ignorance.

does the 99% bug happens in single setup or crossfire setup ?

There's also on XP side something extremely weird.

I am running clean absolute raw system. Nothing on background hell even half the services are stopped and I am getting 3D clocks by detection. Take a look at this:

(That's XP 100% Idle, no diagnostics running nothing in background except: svthost.exe, alg.exe, csrss.exe, lsass.exe, smss.exe, 'system', winlogon.exe, MSI Afterburner)

Browsers were closed while this screen was taken.

Well, in both of my systems (left, and a 5770), the only strange thing is that at some point the memory speed won't go back to 2D mode.
There's no 99% GPU, GPU speed went back to 2D mode, but memory's stuck in 3D with the occasional drops to 2D; don't really know what's causing it since even with no browsers being opened it still does that after playing a game, and consistently does it.

So, it's like the oddity you've found, TwL, but mine only affects memory speed.
Both systems are in Win7 Home Premium SP1.

Well, there's 2927 items on my barebone nlite XP still remaining on system integrated level of loads by IE and OS on 'video'-level triggers. Heck, it could be quite a while to track down have to admit it's a big search. :)

We are forgetting that IE is in system and an browser used by almost all applications as base and in worst scenario sync etc. I do not believe for 1
second that there wouldn't be an 'extension', 'plug-in' or 'executable using either' behind this on an system causing this effect. Finding is another story.
It would be extremely easy for me to VNC over to this sort of system with such issue and go through threads and EXEs running to find singular issue,
but since it would most likely be found on something like 'ActiveX' it couldn't exactly be called as an 'solution'.

    @TwL
And that's why we love Windows, isn't it? =b

Another funny thing I observed, is that IE9 is actually saner than FF4 in terms of GPU usage.
Using that 23 March RC2, if I simply open FF4, GPU shot up to 3D mode (450/790), no matter what kind of webpage you're viewing.
But in IE9 it goes 3D mode only in certain pages, especially those with canvas; otherwise it tends to be in 2D mode (150/150).

One thing to note is that everything will go back to 2D mode if they're minimized, so I guess it's really browser-specific this time, not driver-related.
But this is just an uneducated guess.

This is all before playing a game, though.
If I were to play a game before that observation, it's likely I'd find the memory speed stuck in 790 no matter what.

    That's some messed up detection.
Have you tried playing after killing off CCC.exe & MOM.exe from Task Manager?

I just installed the new Firefox 4 webbrowser.

I found out that playing a youtube video in Firefox 4 with hardware acceleration enabled in both the browser and the flashplayer causes the gpu to enter 3D clocks when you close all browser windows. As long as the browser is opened the gpu clock rises to 400 MHz. After the browser window is closed it rises to the defined 3D clock in CCC, 900 MHz in my case instead to go back to idle clock of 157 MHz. :3eyes:

I solved this problem by disabling the hardware acceleration in the Firefox 4 browser settings. :pc1:

Maybe that is the cause for this ominous 99% bug?

If I had money then I'd have thrown my card through the window, can't use hw accel on IE9 or FF4(which goes to full 3d clocks).

I never had the 100% gpu bug and the mouse lag bug... seems that I'm a lucky man! lol

Joking aside, this March 23 set fixed scaling on Dirt 2 and F1 2010, both were horrible with first Mjölnir preview.

PS: I'm using Chrome 11 with GPU acceleration.

Some claim so, some didn't see any effect turning off hardware acceleration; it's pretty much 'YMMV' in most of the cases.

It's normal if hardware acceleration uses 3D clocks since it uses DirectX to render things out.
What's not normal is FF4 that constantly make the card in 3D clocks even when rendering simple pages, whereas IE9 does not.
(and yes, I'm actually an avid FF user, but that doesn't make me don't want to point out its deficiency)

    Anyway, welcome back.
    Enjoy your card. :p

Yes, that's my point, FF4 is putting the gpu to 3d clock when it is rendering even google homepage, its just too much, this will consume more power than necessary, they should only jump clocks if the page is complex etc.
IE9 does not do this, it activates the clocks only when it encounters complex <canvas> elements(I think), like in IE test drive page.

PS: Had the bug again, while viewing images in windows image viewer, someone give me a shovel to break open my card and rip the gpu apart, I think ati should change their slogan to "ATI: B@st@rd cards made by b@st@rd people and their monkeys."

Or maybe change their 'Gaming Evolved' program to 'Gaming Devolved' or something.
But I gotta stop there before I'm being labeled as 'whiner' by certain users. :p
