AMD has managed to rehire Jim Keller from Apple. Keller was the lead architect of the K8 architecture and of the x86-64 specification he will leave his post as a director in the platform architecture...

Good for AMD, K8 was pretty kickass.

Sounds good, hopefully we shall see a more competitive product from AMD in the future.

I agree. Competition is always beneficial to consumers. This could be a very good move by AMD.

This is good news - maybe he can help AMD get back on track so we can have a more competitive CPU from them in a couple of years.... :nerd:

i tend to get amd products at a discounted rate so im really hoping they can get a serious product to go up against haswell. but that might still be too soon.

Now that they pretty much have an all-star team (couple former IBM CPU designers) and now rehiring this man, hopefully AMD will get back in the performance game against Intel.

Too late to design a new architecture in time for Haswell. AMD will be stuck with Piledriver. It takes several years to design, test, produce and launch a new architecture. Best we can hope for, is massive changes post-Piledriver.

Only if they let him do his job....

A next gen Piledriver is due next year. The post 3rd gen Bulldozer architecture will probably be improved (supposedl with DDR4 support), with the then following one having the full change... (but probably using the same socket). This is just a guess.

Still a long way, the next CPU's will still be based on Bulldozer, so no improvement there. But a good thing, maybe the future will bring us AMD CPU's worthy of buying.

Being based on Bulldozer, doesn't mean there won't be any improvements. There's a **** load of room for improvements to the Bulldozer architecture.

I agree. Bulldozer has some hidden potential. Maybe all it needs is a little help from Jim Keller, perhaps he can make those 8 cores working as they should.

@Piledriver: Will it be a CPU only and not an APU? One of the reasons why Bulldozer wasnt good enough because it doesnt have integrated graphics. 8 cores+iGPU+low-end Radeon graphics card would have made an awesome HTPC. Why not combine Llano iGPU technology and make a decent CPU that has descrete-level graphics.

This man was needed back for AMD right after when he left. I hope that it's not too late for AMD, but they have managed to go on long times without making any profit. We'll see. Will take Year or two before we start to see something.

    Nice!

    :3eyes:
Though the stock clock of 3.80 Ghz is impressive, and also an impressive 4.2 Ghz turbo.

But the faster iGPU is good thing though, it would have been better if the CPU performance was also good, then this would probably be a good match for Intel
