This is going to be interesting. I wonder how much performance improvement there will be with the 3DVcache on Zen4.
My bet is that it's not going to be as good as with Zen3. In part because DDR5 already provides a nice boost in memory bandwidth. But Zen4 also has an improved pre-fetcher, that might mask a bit more of those hits to memory.

Dear AMD, stick it up to your AXX...
I am not willing to spend over 200 bucks for normal MOBO and other 200 for DDR5
    No wonder sales are down....

Same initial MSRP as the 5800X3D? Would have expected them to go higher this time, but also, I guess they can't because of rather expensive mainboards.

7900x will be the sweet spot and a great deal a year or two from now on sale. I'll probably be sitting this entire generation out though so I can't say I'd actually buy one.

Time will tell if faster memory makes enough of a difference, V-cache is something like 2TB/s and DDR5 is 100GB/s and maybe 3-4 times the latency, so V-cache could still net a good bonus.

I count 5 AM5 motherboards under 200 dollars on newegg
    https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007625 601406716&Order=1

Tons of DDR5 well under 200 dollars
    https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007611 601394696 600327642&Order=1

Sales are not down due to prices anymore. They are down because a lot of people just paid to upgrade last gen during lockdown, the cost of living has risen massively in most areas, and inflation is through the roof. People just can't justify luxary purchases based on their hobbies at the moment. Food, bill and rent/mortgages are more important.

I wasn't going to upgrade on account of Meteor Lake coming out, but now that it's been delayed to next year the 7800X3D looks incredibly tempting. Let's see some benchmarks first, though.

This. My co-op fees and utility bill have gone up by 40%, and that doesn't include electricity, which is going up by close to 100%.

So that means that the 7800X3D is going to cost between 450 to 500€, too much for me.

But i`m really curious to see the performance of those new parts.

Gonna hold out until Zen 5 3D is out, I don't demand super high-refresh gaming anyway so my 5800X should suffice for the next couple years at least. Plus that's supposed to be a bigger architectural overhaul.

200 is your limit ? ouch  my recommandation today would be the Z790 msi tomahawk ddr4 345$
you can run 4 nvme + 6 sata with the gpu still at x16 even with a pcie 4.0 x4 card (nvme addon or 10gbit etc) and a 3.0 x1 cards (soundcard)
oh it has 8 rear usb-a too which is great if you have rgb peripherals an external soundcard or drives

the msi x670e meg ace is now at 1000$ on amazon and it could not do that, ddr5 support was atrocious 2/3 kits don't boot at all or restart in loop 1/3 boots at 4800/2 sticks and 3600/4 sticks period
that msi tomahawk is feature wise a high-end motherboard with more support more features except ddr5 for 345$ best bang for your bucks for me

2 years from now we'll probably be close to Zen 5 3D launch

that's even better of a reason because you can get the not quite old gen for cheap just before the new gen releases then upgrade to the new gen some time before the next gen after that without switching boards.

One thing that I was thinking about, was how the throughput on the memory controllers on zen3 are pretty good at given frequency, where as zen4 , its not very good, this is despite the fact that ddr5 is very similar to ddr4, I wonder if the reason for this is due to the lack of vcache, ie hypothetically the memory controller could be tuned for optimal performance with larger less frequent accesses, and that buffer that the cache provides is necessary to get full throughput.

Yeah AM5 motherboard prices are the big issue. I'm sure it is the biggest reason holding back better adoption of the platform.

you have a point but even if ddr5 got faster than ddr4 quite a bunch bandwidth wise .... bandwidth is not what gives it the boost .. the l3 cache on response times is way over 10 times faster to access it ......so when you get more things in there ...that makes things snappier and the cpu gets less waiting time ....so i believe the diference might be somewhat similar to what it was between 5800x and 5800x3d ! i might be completly wrong thought will see
