It’s been a long time coming with lots of leaks and information out there. But AMD today has announced its Ryzen 4000 APUs. First things first, the new APUs, for the time being, will only be available in pre-built systems and OEM. That means disappointment for the consumers out there that have been waiting on a processor with embedded graphics (APU).

Such a hype over some apus. AMD seems cant stop talking about it.

The interesting point is the intercore latency... that should be a nice gaming-cpu, cause it doesn't seem to have 2 CCX but a native 8 core (the 4700ones):-D

Come on AMD barely hype anything. Hell they don't even run adds on TV like Intel. Next year when they have Zen3 cores and RDNA2 GPU's in there APU's I think you will see a lot more hype. In fact I suspect lower end gaming machines to use APU's starting end of next year which will and should get hyped. We are getting to the power and densities where you can fit enough cores and GPU CU's under the hood of one APU. If you think this is hype just wait the APU's from Intel and AMD are going to go crazy over the next 3 years.

Seems like AMD gave up on putting more than 8 CUs on their APUs. Good move, was a waste of die space anyway. Increasing the frequency seems to me a better approach - though we'll have to wait for benchmarks to see if that helps the performance.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X have quite a bit more, so it's not like AMD couldn't do it, but since they also sell discrete GPUs, it just might not be the best business practice to give too much iGPU power, unless competition, or the general market situation, demands it.

On the consoles it makes sense to scale up the igpu on the pc side the the memory is a major limitation so clock speed seems to make make more sense in this situation. I would personally like to see a quad core version with the fully enables igpu to allow more power budget to the igpu i think that would be a better rounded system if a dedicated gpu isnt an option. 8 core cpu with a igpu doesn't make sense to me unless all u want it to do is display an image for office use maybe.

The problem with the platform is the RAM. With DDR4 still been the bottleneck there is no point.

When RAM is not the problem we see PS5 has RDNA2 36CUs, Xbox X Series RDNA2 56CUs and 52CU effective (4 cut off to improve yields) working on GDDR6.

Zen3+ APUs (6000 series) which is going to be on equivalent DDR5 would be interesting to talk about as they will be using RDNA2 iGP and RAM won't be an issue. As DDR5 is equivalent to GDDR6.

APUs are what kept AMD afloat during the Bulldozer era. Intel is actually getting pretty close to beating AMD in APUs, and, Intel has already created "APUs" for models with more than 4 CPU cores. So, AMD needs to exemplify why they've got something special.

The Renoir graphics seem to be a bit different, so I wonder if AMD managed to squeeze in more performance without the need of more bandwidth. Otherwise yeah, except for a new niche cases where memory wasn't such a major bottleneck, any more than 8 CUs on previous APUs was a bit of a waste.

Well im gonna ask it for u guys. Where's the benchmark? I would love to see some 720p :p low gfx settings benches. Who wouldn't :)

Well until they can have serious APU's that demand a high price. Still a couple years out but NVIDIA has no response once APU's really take hold in the mid level gaming machine market.

I suspect the apus are a little TOO good for gaming due to monolithic design (so lower latency and no io die eating like 20W of power budget). They dont want these eating into X/XT sales which are higher margin. I doubt will see retail availability until after Zen3 launch, so that the demand shifts to that. Smart business move by AMD.

Pretty impressive on all 8 cores.

When I was working on a mining company and every few days a truck was filling the tanks with nitrogen for the workshop, with the colleagues at the office we were pointing at it laughing that we need to bring some canisters to fill up every day for our overclocking needs. Few litres per day won't be missing..... :p
