The acquisition will bring together two industry leaders with complementary product portfolios and customers, combining CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, Adaptive SoCs and deep software expertise to enable leadershi... AMD and Xilinx Stockholders Approve AMDs Acquisition of Xilinx
Made good 100% on their stock as they announced new AI product few years back. I hope their talent will not be wasted and AMD integrates them successfully.
I see this as a win-win. AMD is too far behind to get invested in AI or FPGAs by themselves, and Xilinx meanwhile can't fight the other giants alone. It's also in AMD's interest to expand their product lineup, so whenever a Bulldozer is pulled, the whole company doesn't collapse as a result. Does get me to think how interesting it would be should AMD have an integrated FPGA in their CPUs. So maybe most of the package is a FPGA that emulates neural plasticity, and then you have some x86 cores to basically oversee the FPGA's progress, along with hosting the OS or man-made software. Could be a literal AI.
This is exciting stuff, I can't wait to see how AMD innovates with FPGA. Such innovations will be necessary when you have powerful competitors like Apple with its M1 cpu, Nvidia with their acquisition of ARM and oh yeah... Intel with all its money and a new less useless CEO.
I'm sure that's the goal but they need to get a lot smaller on the manufacturing front. IBM's running at the cutting edge with very large neural chips but the biggest chip they can make has about the same connections as a hamster has neurons.
Intel's new CEO is going be there Lisa Su. Pat is a freaking genius and I don't use that word lightly. I also have mad respect for someone that has an associates degree at 18 and started working at intel at the age of 18 and is now the CEO.
I think the real cpu battle is about to begin on intel and amd next gen ! I so hope intel and amd to produce the absolute best they can and each gen to be really hard to decide witch cpu to get ... I DO NOT WANT a clear winner on the cpus they need to keep each other in check !
Don't count Apple out either. There first go at a laptop chip is pretty freaking good for a first attempt. There will be a ton of competition coming from the likes of Nvidia with ARM chips as well. Its going to be an interesting decade for those of us that follow chips.
The m1 is impressive for first attempt , but it is locked to apple and as things are i prefer to quit civilization before i pay for anything with an apple logo . That said if that forse more competition then it is very welcome!
