It does take a FPS hit but there are some fast algorithms for AO.
Upcoming cards will provide good FPS with his ON.
CCC could have ON/OFF switch for AO.

Not really. Leave it up to game devs to implement it. We are "almost" to the point we don't need to force any kind of settings on modern games. Now a days you start forcing settings in the CCC you end up breaking games in one way or another rather then actually improve IQ.
Long gone are the days we need set AA and AF levels etc.
    Honestly not bothered by that.

Game Devs give us good in game options and we get drivers that are current and work with the game there is barely any reason to even open the CCC at all. Heck I barely even open much anymore as it is.

Edit: Having just looked at your Specs, if they are current your the LAST guy that should be asking for "horsepower features" like Ambient Occlusion :3eyes:

HDAO is designed for ATI cards, it's HBAO that takes all the "horsepower" away...see the HDAO whitepaper. It uses the DX10.1 gather4 function to alleviate the texture overhead.

We don't need to break anything by changing settings, the release of "improved" caps seem to do a good enough job of that all by themselves.

Adaptive Vsync wouldn't be a bad thing to implement or multithreaded rendering without breaking anything.

Neither would being able to force specfic crossfire modes in the user profile area like supertile, superAA, SFR, AFR as the user so desires.

Was kinda hoping to play with these options for games as well compared to what we were actually given. It is our cards after all, we should be able to use them to their maximum potential.

If nvidia has it in driver, i see no issue why AMD can't do the same.

@ the one saying its unwanted, nvidia has issues with it too, but a bonus gfx is always welcome by older games.

Im not sure but i think nvidia uses SSAO - screen space, so its a little inferior to HDAO with high definition technique.

HBAO is horizon based and the most demanding technique.

Your maybe misunderstanding. I don't not want it. But I don't see any reason to need a button/slider for it. Games could force it at driver level if it is a "feature" of the games. In Game Menu Options etc.

That's like saying you dont want SuperSampling or Anisotropic Filtering option in driver.

Some older games that dont support it, now would. Dunno what's so bad about it, btw it won't break main driver code.

    pinpoint* by older games

For example Cod4, Cod5, Aion, TeamFortress2, L4d2, most U3E older games and many more could benefit from more depth. Well they already do by nvidia.

I can't even remember the last time I forced anything on my card for a game. But yeah I get the "old games" thing. I have a HUGE Steam List 140+ So it's not like I don't have alot of games to "test" on. I mean AA and AF are a given I like those as much as the next GFX Whore.

But AO is something different. Forcing it on one of those game you mentioned is it really gonna benefit from it? Probably not. Might just break it all together or run like a dog.
I mean just look at the list of games using SSAO doesn't need to be forced(maybe just turned on in options) but will be properly SUPPORTED and Implemented no guessing will it work or not.

This is what I mean. You can't just go around forcing it on stuff expecting to work.

SSAO applies nicely on Skyrim via nvidia inspector. This is what CCC lacks. And you can be sure that Beth's next game will still be coded on that incredibly outdated crappy engine.

    @INSTG8R

Or some newer games, TES5 Skyrim, Darksiders2,..

btw the poll says people would like it too :nerd:

It adds depth - shade to objects/characters/terrain and makes the whole image more natural.. imo a very nice visual feature, if you have extra power why not use it for this. :)

Why not suggest it to japamd - he's the dev for Radeon Pro.

Personally the more features available the better imho.

Well of course.. Who doesn't want more knobs to twiddle...

Maybe I'm just getting less "tweaky" in my old age. I fire up a game go right to Display Options and turn everything up. Job Done!

But then there's a reason why in NV's case it can only be forced thru a "3rd party app" ;) :nerd:

I wouldn't mind this feature to be added.

    Why not?

If you don't want to use it just leave it off. Lot's of us would love this.

Maybe you've mistaken it for frame limiter, AO is build in nvcpl. :)

I would rather have FXAA option in CCC, instead of having to rely on injectors.

Out of curiosity, when exactly was the last time you have seen AMD Anisotropic Filtering working without setting it at CCC ?

I can't now recall a single driver in past 2 years from AMD where AF would of worked by setting it at application.

Could you provide me a fast algorithm that fits all games as a generic DX effect/shader technique?

I had a 470 for over a year, and I never once used AO in any real scenario. I tried it, a couple times, the FPS hit is too huge for a couple extra blotchy shadows. It's just not worth it, it does not add much to the scene.

I would much rather AMD spend time making more useful additions. Something like a built-in FXAA tool would be amazing, so you can really tweak the colors and lighting in games.

I'll tell you, that FXAA tool did way more for any game that I ran it on than AO ever could.

Well, I don't know it but Boris Vorontsov enbseries has 3 levels of SSAO: (from http://enbdev.com/index_en.htm)

So we can ask Boris for help.
    Also here is some link

Well, I don't know if you're following the RadeonPro thread so here is some news for those who were expecting for forced Ambient Occlusion. Latest RadeonPro preview allows forcing Ambient Occlusion in some games and you can try your luck too, even though there's no documentation about how to do it, with a few clicks and a bit of lucky you can add your games to internal AO database of RadeonPro and activate it in game profile.

For more information about the RadeonPro preview, click here

RadeonPro currently supports about 40 games, to name a few:

    - 007 Blood Stone (DX9)
    - Alan Wake (DX9)
    - Alien vs Predator (DX9/DX11)
    - Batman Arkham Asyulum (DX9)
    - Batman Arkham City (DX9/DX11)
    - Bioshock (DX9/DX10)
    - Blades of Time (DX9)
    - BLUR (DX9)
    - Call of Duty 2 (DX9)
    - Call of Duty: BlackOps (DX9)
    - Colin McRae DiRT (DX9)
    - Darksiders (DX9)
    - Darksiders II (DX9)
    - Dead Space (DX9)
    - Dead Space 2 (DX9)
    - Diablo III (DX9)
    - DiRT 2 (DX9/DX11)
    - F.E.A.R. (DX9)
    - FIFA 13 (DX9)
    - Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (DX9)
    - Need for Speed Most Wanted (DX10)
    - Racedriver GRID (DX9)
    - rFactor (DX9)
    - Street Fighter IV (DX9)
    - Tomb Raider Underworld (DX9)

    and more.

Give it a shot and let me know how it's working for ya.
