I am getting benchmark scores lower than I expect and am not sure if I'm CPU limited or if my videocard is abit dodgy. I'm wondering if I should get an i7 or send back my video card. I have a Powercolor 7950 PCS+ and my CPU is an i5 3330. I used a few different benchmarks and some ingame benchmarks. Checking the scores it only performs at about a 7850. See the following, even after an overclock from 950 to 1000 on the core and 1300 to 1400 on the memory didn't make a difference. Infact it went back by 4 Marks. :/

Any ideas? I did a fresh install of Windows not long ago when I got the card, so OS is pretty clean.

    EDIT: UPDATE

Ok I found out the problem. It was the power limit setting that allows increased power draw for the card. At stock it wasn't enough. I adjusted it and now my card works ok. check these scores out

The posted links are for GTX460 :). Might want to double check it again. :)

System is CPU limited in cases when GPU is too-fast-for-a-given-task(say very-low-res Half-Life 2),

Worse case is when CPU is too-slow-for-a-given-task (say my dual-core in 64 men BF3),
But it's still the same deal - GPU waiting for CPU to be given a work.

YOU should not be cpu-limited in any reasonable gaming situation, or not so much that it matters (1st case).

3Dmark 11 has CPU physics test and our i3 chokes on those tests so lower score, my score is around similar to yours on my GTX 660 and i3 2100 (similar situation in catzilla physics test)

Hey, you can compare with my system if you need help, i'm hear all the time, just PM me anytime.

This is mine at stock: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5473705 - 5841

My I5 2400 has the same performance as your i5 3330, but as you can see we are having the same score but i have the 7850 2GB not the 7950.If i overclock to 1250/5500 i have this: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5437863 - 7359

My 7850 on 3dmark11 on Graphics Score jumps from 5870 to 8107 without overclocking the cpu.The 7950 is far superior to mine so you should have much more points that i do.

Conclusion, you dont have a bottleneck but some problem with your system, maybe the ram or your graphic clocks/voltage.

He has an I5 not the I3, i think you got confused because it's the 3330.

I see where your problem is, my driver is the 9.10.8.0 and yours the 9.2.0.0.

I'm using the latest beta 12.11 and you?

I'm downloading the 12.10 atm. pretty sure I'm already running it, but I'll reinstall see what that does.

    interesting update

well this is rather odd. I tried the beta driver, 12.11 and this did improve my graphics score to 6286.

    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5479088

but I tried the stock 7950 clock speeds of 800/1250 (thats down 200mhz on the core and 150mhz on the mem). yet my score in GPU went UP!! to 7625. 1800 points on an underclock. first time ever for me.

    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/5479157

my only guess is the card just needs more voltage at the standard PCS+ speed of 950/1250

I'm glad i could help, and at certain point if you raise de memory clock too much you will get even less points.

That's because ECC is going Active and trying to fix errors as much as it can by bits, and when it can't it shows artefacts or crash, but as long as it Active-On it lowers the performance cause the real bandwidth is lower because extra proccesing + ram error correcting mode.

so would you suggest voltage increases? the card stock is 950/1250 and give worse score than 800/1250 clock. they haven't applied enough voltage from the factory? Or bad card?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. :)

I've heard some 7950 come with 1,250v from the factory, so you can push the hell out of it as long it has good temperatures.
