SEGA today revealed details of the latest foray into the Alien franchise, this time a squad-based first-person shooter titled Aliens: Colonial Marines. Given the thumbs-up from 20th Century Fox, SEGA and Gearbox Software plan on releasing the game for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late 2008.

In Aliens: Colonial Marines, players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an Aliens assault with an original story penned by renowned writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. The game promises to retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films while leveraging next-generation technology to create a new interactive Aliens experience - sansSigourney Weaver.

Classic Aliens weaponry such as pulse rifles and flamethrowers will be at your disposal as well as brand-new equipment and skills within a squad-based combat system. Featuring claustrophobic environments, a brooding soundtrack, and a surprises, players must battle against the alien hordes in different levels, some of which include the familiar and stark interiors of the abandoned Sulaco along with environments created specifically for the game.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will feature a story driven single-player mode and an all-new four player co-op mode allowing players to share the experience with three friends. In co-op mode, each player will assume the persona of a United States Colonial Marine and have a distinct role to play in the completion of every mission. Additionally, more multiplayer modes will be revealed later in the year.

Aliens : Colonial Marines is a First Person Shooter with mechanics that stress working together as a unit. Four Colonial Marines investigate the Sulaco. Unlike many FPS titles, there is not one central hero character, the role is shared among the whole squad. The game reinforces that notion by assigning the player to control a set marine for a particular mission; you will experience everyone's perspective.

Marines carry four weapons:
*Primary weapon
*Secondary weapon
*grenades
*handgun

Primary weapons like pulse rifles and smartguns, are how class will be represented.

"We wish to remain authentic to the true soldiers, so characters generally do not drop or pick up weapons. That is one of the reasons we switch character during the story - to keep our soldiers realistic, but still give the player access to different weaponry throughout the game".

The secondary weapon will vary and be customized according to the character, like Hicks' shotgun in Aliens.

Each character will also carry a special item they can interact with allies or the enviornment.

*Hacking tool for sealed doors
*Torch can weld things shut
*Medical Kit can revive as well as neutralize acid burns.

There are Squad Commands. Besides move and attack orders, you can also use context senstive commands like hacking doors, sealing vents, and setting up gun turrets.

Aliens will use the envioronment to their advantage. Air ducts, ceiling pipes, gratings on the floor.

FOUR PLAYERS CO-OP CAMPAIGN
2 players Splitscreen and 4 players online play! Players can join and drop, a.i. takes over the vacancies.

There will be moments where you can barricade yourselves in a room to survive an onslaught of aliens.

The game will go beyond the Sulaco, there will be human enemies involved that want the aliens as biological weapons. And the mystery of the "space jockey" species might be also revealed.

TYPES OF ALIENS.
"There won't be porcupine aliens shooting spines at you. It can't be goofy or stupid. You have the original Alien, and we sort of think of him as the smart one, as a scout. He'll hide and ambush people.

Then there's the Warrior Alien, which we see in Aliens, which is going to be the one that rushes you and comes in volume."

The character switching and special weapons/abilities sounds a lot like Jericho. Hmm...

This is one game I really hope doesn't suck.

You never played aliens vs predator 2? In that you could select different characters and their own personal weapons. Hopefully it wont get messed up like so many games these days...

It's not. It is just a tube. It deposits an egg. It almost the complete opposite (things come out only, not go in AND come out).

As far as the game is concerned, if they just make it almost identical to the first AVP, but without the Predator, this will be on of the greatest games of all time.

The fear in the second AVP kind of got lost somewhere. It didn't have the same sense of "THEY'RE COMING OUT OF THE FREAKIN' WALLS!" as the first. Might have something to do with the fact you die MUCh faster and easier in the first. And no save points. And the motion detector did **** all except scare the crap out of you. All it did was tell you that you are about to be attacked.

The Aliens are so fast that it doesn't help you out at all apart from the early warning part of it. That's how it should be.

I might have to play the Marine campaign on AVP again actually...

Yes he was referring to a "you know what"

What I would love more is Aliens vs Predator 3. With todays engines imagine how much spookier it would be to play as a human marine.

Aslong as it isn't in any way related to the AVP movies and uses the same backdrop as the past two games
