Will the remastered version be free for those who already bought the game?

Doubtful, as it will most definitely be an Epic exclusive.
Since Remedy signed a publishing deal with EGS for the next few releases.

This is probably the fourth time or so a remaster of Alan Wake has been hinted at by various leaks/rumors.

I get that a remaster of AW would work to build new interest in the property in time for a sequel announcement.

But, AW does not need a remaster.
It still looks fantastic, plays great. The PC version runs great.

Agree about that, the original is good.

Still, should this be true, very hyped to see how the game has been remastered.

Ray tracing would work great in AW, for example, I believe.

Although the original AW was one of the best looking games on the X360 generation, it's has aged a bit.
It depends on how much they want to invest in this remaster, but they could ad a ton of improvements. Better resolution textures, fog volumes, more grass and trees, greater draw distances, better water shaders, ambient occlusion, ray-tracing, global illumination, improved facial animations, physically-based lighting and shading, etc.
    We could go from this:

But, should AW go to something like that?
A big reason why it's setting worked so well for the story it told, was that it looked like a peaceful, nice place. A scenic location that was visually inviting and serene.

The way the peace and tranquility of the forest would fade away as the darkness flowed in was wonderfully done because of how drastically the change in tone was pronounced.

Honestly, the only thing Alan Wake needs improved on visually is it's facial animations. They are very stiff, and instantly stand out compared to the rest of the game's visuals.
But, then again, it depends on exactly what this rumored remaster actually is.
Is it just the original game with a small bump in texture detail and tiny pace of polish? Is it just bringing the PC's updated textures and lighting to a console release for the new consoles?

Or, is it a full remaster on the Northlite engine?

Yes, AW starts in a small quiet town, but it quickly escalates into a fight for survival, in a dark forest.
Of course we don't need a dark, oppressive ambient for every chapter of the game. We can also have idyllic scenes.

I'm just saying, if the remaster does actually "remake" the game... there's no reason to drastically alter the established design and art.
    It works perfectly.

Keep in mind though that most of the time these remasters end up lackluster on the pc as they are aimed more at consoles.

We could run Alan Wake at 4k 60fps since launch if you had the power for it.
On console though a 4k 60fps remaster will be night and day for them.

I'd love a remake, but it will mostly likely be a quick polish up and rerelease.

That's a big part of, what does this remaster actually entail if rumors are true.

Part of me feels it will just be a matter of bringing the updated PC textures to a new release for the current consoles.
I doubt they would go to a full remake in Northlite.

In the end, I'm not that concerned. I already own Alan Wake on Steam.
My only real interest in this, if it's true, is that it could definitely mean Alan Wake 2 is in the works.

If its using new remedy engine and has raytracing 60fps is all we gonna get. Its fine i think Control feelt really smooth at 60fps and was looking amazing.

Control runs very well past 60 fps with the right settings, even with RT On.

Anyway what I meant was if the remaster is locked to 60 fps max (on PC) it's worse than the original. But Northlight engine in itself doesn't mean a 60 fps cap, thankfully.

Nice! But I'd prefer an actual second episode.

By the way, I still remember that old video where Remedy was showing at some Intel conference how much their new engine was powerful and able to perform tasks other engines had never done before at that time. Destructibility, dynamic shadows and time of day, volumetric effects and so on... It was astonishing. Unfortunately the game and the engine got nerfed to accomodate xbox 360's hardware limitations, but despite that Remedy always pushed the technological boundaries further, offering features other game engines did not have. I am curious how their Ray Tracing will work in open environments, won't be as easy as Control.

Even if not announced, the big project Remedy is working on is more than likely AW 2.

Especially if this remaster turns out to be true as Remedy have said they are working on a smaller and bigger project based on the same universe.
