probably a noob question, but here i go....

you are all talking about forcing fp16 for the fx... how do i do that with the 3d analyzer ? is that the Z-buffer options ??? and if yes... do i need to select with stencil or without ??

guess it will be a dumb question... but hey i'm not that smart when it comes to graphics :) i'm better at playing the game :) LOL...

if anyone could help i would appreciate it :)

    regards

This trick has good chances to be good for FX 5900; in most of the cases we can get acceptable FPS rate but it's not an ultimate solution for everyone. The max number of FPS depends also by other specs like your RAM and CPU. Don't despair though, you can still get a pretty good water reflection running the game in dx 8.1:

did everyone here get rendering quality like Neosolid with this subj trick by cost of those artefacts?

Could someone post screenshots comparing the 8.1 with the water files from the steam forums, and this method?

Would be interesting to see the FPS/IQ differences.

I didn't get any artifacts on my 5900xt with 66.93 drivers using the ATI path.
Not using the ATI path gives a bit more performance, but causes some glitches, (not as bad as the shots posted by Neosolid though). They are only noticable on water reflections in a few places.

I think i may have found a easy way enable dx9 on HL2. I was messing with the registry one day and I came across something that looked like the dx setting.

    start>run>type "regedit">
    go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Valve>Source>hl2>Settings

in there will be DXLevel and mat_dxlevel
the current entries are 0x00000050(80) for both
change it to 5a(hex) or 90(decimal)

In the advance display setting it says hardware dx 9.0

The game seems to run faster too which was strange since most say it slow it down. So it would be helpful if some of you guys could check it out to see if it really works.

I had some IQ artifacts, but I solved removing trilinear & AF optimizations from Nvidia control panel.

    can anyone try this?

yay! an easier way.... im so lazy arent i? but i like the easiest route. i found 3d analyze but please fill me on on how to use this program. Also, i'd like to ask: Does anyone know if all you do is add -dxlevel 90 that it will help? cause i think i did try this once before and the game seemed to run slower so i took this command off.
