I see that you have 3gig...of memory.....make sure that its running dual channel.....IE...2 1gig chips...or 2 512 chips....to make dual channel....if you are using both...that is one problem....take the 512 chips out and get another 2 1gig chips so that you are running dual channel....you may be killing your own system

Dual channel in the best case only contributes 3%-5%, so even if he uses single channel mode that'll not be the main issue. Also, 3gig of memory in single channel mode are better than 2 gig in dual channel in my opinion.

I'd take 2 gig in dual channel over 3 in single any day of the week...especially if running XP. Systems just run more zippy and responsive in dual channel.

If the memory is mismatched really bad it can affect the performance....otherwise I agree with you.....that is why I suggested for him to look at it and see....and if his virtual memory is not set right that can also affect him....it's worth looking at everything he has because something is really wrong.....

Wrong, it can makes a significant difference. I use SiSoft Sandra to bench my memory and in single channel mode it performs around 5000Mb/s, in dual channel mode I get 8500Mb/s transfer. Of course there are other factors like CPU, and what size block are you writing to memory etc, but its considerably more than the 5% difference your making it out to be.

    Hey Zooze,

I think he was referring to game performance, not actual memory bandwidth. But as I mentioned, dual channel definitely speeds things up. I simply wouldn't run anything other than dual channel.
