I apologize if such a topic has been discussed before, but I tried researching it and I'm either not looking it up properly or there just isn't anything out there. So, I turn to guru3d for help. Here's the situation: Recently, my desktop computer would not boot into 98, but i could boot fine into XP. Well, I did some research, and found a way to allow win98 to boot again. That was fine and dandy, but when I rebooted later, I noticed that the primary hard drive automatically loads 98, no boot menu to choose OSes. Oh, I did find these instructions: Repairing the Windows XP Boot Loader However, when I tried to do it, the part where it says load 98 startupdisk and type "DEBUG <READ.SCR" fails to work. Apparently, there's no such thing as a "debug" command. Said invalid command or something like that. Oh, and I've tried both fixboot and fixmbr for windows xp, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe you have to create a new Win98 disk, as debug.exe is part of the Ramdrive the Windows 98 startup disk creates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/185645 Here you can get one, for example: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm (Just make sure to not select the one without the Ramdrive. )
I found out that debug.exe was inside the ebd.cab file on the win98 boot disk. I extracted it to a. I don't understand what I'm supposed to do though after typing in debug bootsect.dos.... I found this though:http://www.thpc.info/dual/bootsectdos.html I'm going to try that, and I'll report back here.. UPDATE: \o/ Success! I used these two fantastic webpages: http://www.thpc.info/dual/repairdualboot.html and http://www.thpc.info/dual/bootsectdos.html I used the BTSECT.bat file that I copied over to my floppy disk, and now everything is cool! Thank god my desktop still has a floppy disk drive. (well, actually I probably could have used a CD or flash drive right?) Anyway, everything is cool. I hope this post is useful for others, if it ever happens to anyone else.
