    My 980m 8GB seems to be unaffected, which is a little strange as its a cut down gpu also?

    Then, I'm not looking for problems, it just plays smoooooooothly. I don't get those big daft video anomalies when I play that game.
    So they don't really matter a f*ck in actual applicabilities.

    Maybe, just maybe if I turned what I just said into a monochrome/B&W CLI display it will impress the retards and the like, being more technical and fancy like!

    We've seen the results of this "benchmark" for both cards already. Continuing to compare GTX970 and GTX980 proves nothing at all and will only result in this thread getting closed. We can either use a realistic approach, which means testing previous generations for similar behavior, or we can call this a complete waste of time.

    There's too many people trying to prove the existence of an "issue" that may not even exist. You're not helping their cause, so they don't want you involved in the thread. I'm trying to help find an answer, and some don't like the idea of using proper testing methodologies because they risk disproving the existence of an issue. So, looks like we're both wasting our time.

    Unplug gpu monitor cable and use onboard gpu if you can, Im pretty sure it wont happen anymore.

    Just tried vultureX again with 32 or 64 and now it can allocate 2880MB instead of 2816, but the drop is still here if ran on main gpu..
    So its kinda a moot point testing this way imho.

    I'm getting strange spikes towards the end when going with less than 64MiB per chunk:

    Tested while running on iGPU with no monitor connected to my GTX970. Aero was disabled as well.

    P.S. when chunksize is 512MiB, it tests merely 3072 MiB and not the 3584 MiB I expected

    Perhaps this issue can be fixed at firmware/VBIOS after all?

    I just take a look on GTX 670 and GTX 680 high level diagram.

    Basically, GTX670 has only one SMX disabled while GTX680 retains full SMX.
    It is also a 'cut-down'. Almost exactly similar cut-down configuration for GTX 970 and GTX 980. But your result on GTX670 doesn't exhibit any bandwidth issue!

    EDIT: GTX600 series has 2 SMX within a GPC while GTX 900 has 3 SMM within a GPC. I can only hope this issue isn't caused by how the 3 SMM being cut accross the four GPC units.

    The GPU can't use all the VRAM at once so maybe there is just a bug in the way the memory is shuffled around to avoid this hardware limitation (SMM unit deactivation scheme). I would imagine nVidia would have known about this issue when the chip was designed and came up with some way to handle it.

    You might have accidentally run
    vRamBandwidthTest.exe 512 3072
    instead of
    vRamBandwidthTest.exe 512

    The first limits the memory the program allocates to 3072 MB, so indeed no more than 3072MB will be allocated, whereas the last command is only restricted by whether the block still fits in the remaining free vRAM.
    It does allocate 3584MB for me when I run the last command.

    As umeng2002 pointed out the memory might be shuffled around or paged when it is not needed anymore, which could explain the spikes, but there is no way to tell what happens exactly. Memory management is not an easy subject and all the different optimizations and system variables might influence the results in unpredictable ways.

    Good to see your changes. Question, does your version allow to allocate and keep allocated that fixed amount of vram which is set by 2nd parameter?
    You know, to fill 3GB, run 1st test on those blocks which should show it allocated only "good" blocks and "bad" blocks are left for game to use.

    Then launching game to force it this way to use "bad" blocks and see if there is impact. (apparently launching game which does not need more than remaining amount of vram)
