    Hi everyone,

    I've got a serious problem.
After installing the new forceware release 174.xx (with every release of the 174 rev. the problem persists) I got a strange high-pitch noise in 2D as in 3D mode on my 9600GT golden sample from Gainward.

Now the real "problem" is: If I install a modded version of the 171.16 beta drivers, the problem's are all gone.

Does anyone know, what could cause this trouble?

Just to note: It's not the common v-sync problem, not about my PSU (other ppl just got the same problem, even with different brands like Sparkle and BFG).
From Nvidia I got no response on this yet.

Perhaps someone around here could help me.

    Thanks in advance,

    Haevion

P.S. Excuse my bad english, please. :)

I know this is not a direct answer but a possible solution, rivatuner allows manual fan speed adjustments. I believe even Ntune does as well. There are also different heatsink fan combos for gpu's that would eliminate the noisy fan altogether. My 7900GS does wierd things too, I took off the cover, unplugged the fan and have a 120mm blowing up onto it from the pci below, alot cooler and quieter.

    Sorry, forgot to mention that.
With the 171er, everything is fine as mentioned above, with 174.xx the increase of fanspeed results in making the noise even louder until I switch up to ~40% fanspeed - then the fan is (for a silent system) too loud, but the noise is complettely gone again.
    I've no idea on this.

I had the exact same issue with my 8600 GT. I resolved it by removing the heat sink completely. re-applying all the thermal paste and the heatsink. I figure that the heat sink was on too tight or maybe out of allignment slightly.

    runs silent now.

I have an issue with a high pitch noise coming from my PC, I stuck a pencil in both the 9600GT fans and the noise was gone. Is this true about the fan speeds in the 174 series drivers?

EDIT - Using Rivatuner I have been messing with my fan speeds rasing the fan speed increases the whine quite dramatically. However dropping the speeds of the fans a mere 5% has silenced the whining... for now.

micketh, that's EXACTLY what happened for me, too.
So did they change anything in 174er about the fan's speed?

Which 9600 you got, the one that has 512mb and 700mhz core??

Is it this one??? I have ordered it for my HTPC im building, hope this doesnt apply to all Gainward cards, as it was silence I was looking for. :)

    That's what I ordered, yes.
But I think the noise occurs on different 9600 brands, too.
I recently read about Sparkle and BFG having the same issue.

In a few days I will recieve a new fan from gainward, giving it a try, but I still think it's a problem about the fan-concept itself or the drivers-architecture as well.

I forwarded that problem to Gainward and Nvidia again, from Nvidia I got no response so far.

btw. < 5% fan speed the noise becomes more silent, but is still recognizeable for me.

Use the 171.16 Beta from CD and let's hope together, that nvidia will adress on this issue.

palit provides a little program called vdotool that works incredible for dynamic fan speed and OC'ing. If you can find it online (dont know if its free or not)

not sure, ive always used 174's with the 9600's however dropping fam speed seems of made a significant difference on taking the edge of the high pitched whine though it is still there.

I have just gotten a new pc with a 9600GT and i have this exact problem. When i'm playing a game like ArmA i hear this constant high pitched wine. It varies in pitch with FPS/movement. Really disturbing.

I used the drivers that came with the card. 174.40. I have no Fan control through these drivers so i'm not sure what to do now.

Should i change drivers? Must the fan turn slower using some tweaking software?

maybe the drivers interact differently with the card, my card for example does a noticeable but low pitch buzzing/wooshing sound when playing games and when scrolling up and down fast in Opera/Firefox, i think its one of the transistors in the card doing this or something, can be annoying sometimes but it's no reason for concern.

stick to the 171x for now.

I did some further testing. In my case the sound originates from the speakers, not the case or fan. Tracked it down to where the noise is gone when i plug my headphones straight into the audiocard.

So only when i connect the pc to the amplifier, which is the case normally, the noise is audible. Must be some sort of ground loop effect.

I'll see whether or not i can connect things differently here. Not much hope because in my room it's just one same electrical group.

Hello i got the XFX 9600GT Version and i have the same High Pitch Noise coming from the fan.
I tried Stoping the fan with my hand and unless it was 100% Stoped it would create that annoying noise.

So what i really want to ask what are a few steps to fixing it?

    1) Gonna try 171.XXX drivers for now and see if it's fixed.

    2) Gonna try rivatuner and Lower the fan speed by 5% and see if it fixes it.

    Anything else?

Edit: So i checked if it was the Drivers problem.
I've been running 171.16 all along And i have the buzzing problem.

If i try installing any other drivers, newer ones my computer starts up in 640 x 420 and 4 bits. I cant fix it.
But the Buzz goes away with 175xx drivers :p I still need to find out how to fix the rez problem.

    Edit2: Fixed
Just Install N Tune from www.nvidia.com or guru3d and make the fan go around 15%-ish faster. My Pc is much less annoying now :D

Tho i'm not sure if i'd have to put it back to Auto when i play games.

I have a strange issue with mine, and I hope it doesnt mean its going to die.

I was using pcwizard 2008, and I ran the directx video card benchmark program. and when it got to the billboard part of the test the graphics card started to squeal. WTF was that?

Its not fan noise! Its the XFX single slot version...512ddr3 pcie card.

Its on an ASUS M2N-MX SE PLUS mobo with 2gigs of ddr2 667mhz, and AMD 2.5ghz Athlon X2...480 watt power supply

It was in my Dell E521 AMD X2 /2.2ghz pc with a 300 watt power supply...

i have a Phenom tower with amd chipset and ATI 3870 graphics card...thinking of swapping and testing...but I was wondering if anybody else has had a similar problem.

I did just install the latest drivers instead of the installation cd...
