If you mean single core Athlon 3000+ by writing "3000+" than your friend is making me laugh. If it is true he might spend a few bucks more for a cpu <rotfl>

1GB more ram wouldn't hurt either.

So, he expected to get big performance by spending $500+ on a graphics card and use hardware that's over 2 years old (and probably cost less combined than the card when they were new)? Surely if he can afford a card of that calibre he could afford a new chip and some memory? Really, even an X2 3800+ and another 1GB of memory would make it happier. But, that board simply isn't designed for overclocking either so don't expect too much out of it if he went that route.

lol...talk about bottleneck..... your friend should have gotten himself a new dual core + mobo + 2gig ram + x1950Pro or 8800gts

get another gig of ram and overclock the cpu....
while that is a pretty big slowdown there, you shouldnt be getting 4000.
perhaps the power supply is not good?

for reference i get 7.5kish on my rig with 06, so even with the slower cpu/less ram it shouldnt be that bad... but definately get one more gig of ram in there...

ya i get 6500 on this rig lol maybe me and him should swap cards my 7950 for his 8800 and i give him a lil cash u think that would be better? what kinda score would i be pulling with that 8800gtx as oppesed to my 6500 now with the 7950gtx?and would that run better for him also?

I'm guessing it would pull around the same if you switched video cards with him, but it would still do good on both ends becuase he would be getting same performance for some money back. And you'll be getting a good deal.

He should buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103053 He has socket 939 right?

WOW that is low even my old rig running a P4 3.4G prescott, G6800U, 2G mem, 680w PSU. I get around 6500 on 3Dmark 06

I would very much like to see that...there's no way a single 6800Ultra can score that much on 3dmark 06. Maybe you meant 3dmark 05....

My 6800GT in my old PC could pull off around 2500...this was at clocks beyond the Ultra, at 430/1150.

That is indeed a very low score for a gtx. Is that 3000+ running at stock clocks? He could try to overclock him because a 3000+ can get to 3.0ghz. At those speeds it will run a lot better. I have my 4000+ running between 2.9 and 3.0ghz for gaming and 3.0ghz for benchmarking and my 06 score is 7200. That's not bad for a single core cpu imo :)

Actually that board is an ok overclocker, it doesn't let you up the chipset voltage in the bios but you should be able to hit 290-310htt with it before it craps out. What with the 9x multiplier on the 3000+ you should be able to hit 2.6-2.8ghz if you have a decent stepping (I think E3 and E6 were the best).

The ram and memory dividers will hold you back though, but a big overclock on the cpu will be a big benefit to overall performance even if you have to underclock the ram a little.
