I think the 8600GTS is the best card for X2 users.
Why? The 8800 cards require more CPU power to perform well.
I was getting 11000 in 3DMark05 untill I overclocked my CPU.

If you have an X2 CPU and you want to play DirectX 9 games -> 8600GTS
I say DirectX 9 games because I really doubt that 256MB will be enough for DirectX 10 games...

naah the X2s can still provide the power for the 8800s

    here:

even an X2 3800+ is enough for the 8800 :) though Ocing it would help too

    Rong!

    On an X23800+:
THe 8600GTS Overclocked will have the same 3DMark05 score as someone as someone with a 8800GTS on normal clocksettings.

So by buying the 8600GTS, you will save 70-100$ and performance ( in DirectX 9 games ) will be almost the same.

The 8800 cards require a C2D or higher to run at their best, I have seen to many benchmarks results ( including my own ) to say otherwize...

It's your CPU. 3.92Ghz or not, the Pentium 4 doesn't use the clockfrequency as efficiant as a Core 2 Duo does.

I know, I know, but I'll just juse 16xQAA in every game, so I'll use the card (almost) to its full potential :)

means nothing in games. A 8800 will blow away a 8600 in every game. 3DMark really does not mean anything and I am a FM regular poster ;)

Well I have the BFG 8600 GTS OC edition. I have OC'd it to 722 with the memory OC'd to 2100.

    Idle temp is 46-48 c
ATI artifact scan rusn it up to about 68-70 c
    WoW runs at 68 c

I would get an 8800 but it physically wont fit into this stupid dell case. I would have to dremel a little off the fan casing for the CPU and take off the faceplate of the card. I think It is time to buy a case and motherboard and swap everything over. What do you al think?

Oh yeah, and I don't think I am able to OC my CPU with the crappy dell BIOS

The 3DMark score for 8600s is misleading. They score much better than a 7900GS/X1950Pro in 3Dmark, but are equal at best in games.

I think we all have to stop using 3DMark and start comparing in-game results only. I for one use America's Army. Every time I overclock or tweak something, I can see a good fps increase.

I think that UT3 will be THE most important benchmark in the nex 2 years. This game supports 8 cores and it will support DirectX 9 and 10.

And we all know that Unreal engine games get a good increase by overclocking CPU or VGA. ( especially CPU )

True. A long time ago drivers were stable and the interface was a lot better.
I've had 3 Nvdisp bluescreens in the last month.

Nvidia drivers are still good, they just suck for the 8-series.

Let's not forget that DirectX 10 is a huge step.
Let's wait and see how AMD...

Funny thing is, the Geforce 9 will be DirectX 10.1.
Let's hope it's not to hard for Nvidia to "upgrade" the drivers once again.

DirectX 10 is not "finished", DirectX 10.1 will be much better for the consumers and the people who have to make drivers or games.
