Hi i'm new to this forum and have already read the sticky about cooling and all the options. but i am only able to get 2 replacement vga cooling systems and both are from thermaltake. I recently built myself a new pc and wanted a decent graphics card for it. So I went ahead and bought a Leadtek® nVidia PX7600GT PCI-E 16x 256MB 128-bit, DDR3, 0.9nm ,MyVIVO , HDTV,DVIx2, TV-out,HW monitor,GPU:560MHz, Mem:1400MHz only to send it back the next day cos it made my pc sound like a vacuum cleaner :frown: I was hoping that they would release a silent version of the asus 7900 series. but so far i haven't seen one. Ok so my question is I wanna get a nvidia 7900gt but cannot handle the noisy fan. The zalman vf700 and 900 are almost silent, and the cooling is outstanding. Pretty sure these will fit more or less any card.
yeh the vf-900 fits anything from a geforce 4/radeon 9000 upto a 7900/X1900 damn easy to fit too, takes 10 minutes if that. you get a fan controller so you can run it at various speeds

Can't open that page Kon$olE. Thanks for the info. Is thermaltake not a good brand? I can get it cheaper than Zalman. i have found a place that has the following Zalman: VF900-Cu Fatal1ty FS-V7 VF700-Cu But these all have fans on them. The thermaltake Schooner has no fans on it and needs none. Therefore is truely silent. I read some of the reviews and it seems good.
Also i'd like to know which brand would be the best to buy of these 4. Leadtek, Asus, XFX or Gainward? Thx for the help.
i dont think id trust a fanless cooler on a 7900.. zalman sell one that goes on either side of the graphics card and its massive, and even with that they recommend a fan for high end cards.
Question is if i run the Zalman in quiet mode will it be good enough while 3d cards running in 3d? In normal mode it is only 10DB or so quieter than stock.
The VF90 is the best of the three there. The page thats meant to work is just a CPU HSF on it, copper, with a 120mm fan. The temps are incredible, so they OC it like mad. The 120mm fan makes sure its cool, but also very quiet. Also, if you dont want to go ghetto, the vf900 comes with a controller to make it go from high--> low. I know the idea of a passivly cooled computer is great in theory, but you need some air moving around for things really to work. It wont be too loud, but wont be 100% passive either.
well im running an X1800XT which is known for cooking temps, its also overclocked to the maximum that ccc will allow and i only move the fan controller from silent when im playing a game for ages or benching
I wouldnt think that there would be much difference in temp as the heatsink is very good and the fan just blows the heat away. Leadtek 6800GT: Zalman VF900 (Low) Idle: 43 Load: 64 clocks: 417/1.13 Zalman VF900 (High) Idle : 41 Load: 57 Clocks: 421/1.14 Above info taken from Pro-clockers.com, link here Its a totaly different gfx core but gives you a slight idea on what the difference is. Thanks for the info guys and the quick replies. First of all i will either go with the Zalman VF900 or the Thermaltake Giant III Extreme (which is cheaper and has more functions). I have two zalman vf900's on my cards and even at full speed they are pretty much silent to my ears. Night and day sound/performance difference over the stock HSF.
Out of the 3 you said I would choose either the Gainward or XFX. As Gainward make very nice cards and XFX as I have had 3 cards from them so far FX5200, 6800GT and a 7900GT with no problems at all. I vote against Leaktek as I never liked the look of them and never really heard much of them. Regards Steve
Hi guys thx for the advice. I ended up buying the XFX 7900GT and ordered a Zalman VF900 for it. Btw XFX's fan is actually a lot softer than the fan on the leadtek 7600gt. Anyways I tried out battlefield 2 with AA and AF Maxed and at highest resolution and max detail. Looks great and plays great too. Thx for the help
