theres a lot of disbelief about this card, but when it hits the shelves (if its true) what can ATI possibly do to catch up... at this rate we will be seeing 1ghz core GPUs pretty damn soon

I was all set to shell out for the ATI 512mb x1800xt and then i heard about this beast of an nvidia gpu.

+ there aint any x1800xt available in the uk
[what a shock, NOT] [Glad there wasnt tbh]

Although, i have recently found a stumbling block on my transition towards nvidia..

    http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=55093

Can anyone enlighten me on this issue? Any chance of a driver fix for this???

I believe the new forceware drivers already addressed this issue, they fixed it in version 78.11 (or 78.03 ?) so there shouldn't be any problems with shimmering in 8x.xx drivers

    Actually, NV's AA is better
the 7800 series has LESS shimmering than the x1800

    ATi does have better AF

I believe it when they say 800Mhz. They never said it was on stock cooling, and I'm assuming it wasn't. I'm going to assume it was with like dry ice or LN2 cooling.

I think I'm going to get the , I think this is the brand: The 3dfx lab card: 664 DDR3 memory, going up to 3800 resolution and the price tag is $2800.

It will skip a lot of upgrades "problems"...:D

    Very interesting GPU indeed.

Now all I can do is wait for ATi's R580.

And once it comes out, I'll decide based on technical facts. No bias.

I'm getting REALLY excited, and i can already picture this: Running 2x 7800GTX 512MB, 2GB RAM, Ageia Physic Card (Forgot how to spell it :p), AMD X2, 1TB HD, Zalman reserator 1 water cooling, 20 inch OLED samsung monitor, ThermalTake Tai-Chi case, 6 LED 120mm fans and surround sound speakers. XD

Well if you wait for the R580 technically that is competing with the G80, not the G70 so it wouldnt exactly be an apples to apples comparison between a R580 and G70.

its looks quite good, I just wished I could mix that card with my 7800 gt.

I cant say it will beat ati's new card tbh even though this card is clocked quite high the x1800 can be also, not even that the memory controller is capable of 1024 mb's.

If you wait for the next card from each company each time you'll be forever waiting. By the time we see G80 and R580 we'll be tempted with future delights of G90 and R6xx (assuming they use those names) parts.

Well considering a stock 7800GTX goes toe to toe with the X1800XT in most tests, you dont think a 512MB GTX clocked at 550MHz core 1.8GHz memory wont be able to trounce it? Yes the X1800 core has a lot of headroom, in extreme cases upto 1GHz with extreme cooling, but the 7800GTX has been clocked to 800MHz core with I assume extreme cooling (according to The Inq so take how you will) and guess what? Even at 1GHz core, with 16 pipelines the X1800XT still likely wouldnt be able to able to keep pace with a 800MHz 24 pipeline GTX core if we take both extremes as the potential headroom. Even at the stock 512MB GTX core speed of 550MHz, a X1800XT would have to be clocked at 800+MHz to match it using theoretical numbers.

The fact the new memory controller can handle upto 1GB of VRAM means nothing atm or for the forseeable near future so certainly wont factor in any performance comparisons between the two cards. While the memory controller has shown marked improvements by improving memory efficiency in Doom 3 and Open GL in general, the specs of the 512MB GTX are seriously aggressive and I honestly cant see the prgrammable memory controller being able to overcome the serious advantage in raw power the GTX 512 will have over the X1800XT. I could be wrong mind, but id assume that Direct3D games are already handled pretty efficiently by the X1800 so the same level of performance probably wont be gained as seen in the case of Open GL by tweaking the controller.

Lol I totally forgot that the 7800 has 24 pixel pipes, man I feel real sorry for ATI what makes things even worst in a couple of weeks nvidia are releasing there new SLI mobo.

I feel small with my rig TBH. I need a major upgrade, but the graphics are getting out of control right now, with this cards at monstrous levels of speed and power being released in less than 6 months. Next the G80 and r580. Calm down plz LOL

i wouldnt say they are getting out of control.. i think the goal is to have cards powerful enough to run AA/AF and not lose performence not even at high resolutions

Whomever said "If the r580 is released, the r520 will be a complete loss.." I'd have to totally disagree.

You have to realize this may just be a test-bed for ATI on the 90nm proccess. And if that is all it is, then I'd say they did a damned good job. OC'ing up to and beyond 1GHZ on the GPU is spectacular. If the 580 was released, I'm sure that stock holders wouldn't be shaking in their boots. Maybe a bit shaken, but that's all.
