I know this is Inq stuff (not always junk) but it it is really interesting:

"We know that new Nvidia card is a very much tweaked original G70, Geforce 7800 GTX PCB design and this time the card will work at a magnificent 550MHz core and at 1800MHz memory. Nvidia felt threatened by the X1800XT and therefore decided to use new Samsung memory. You can find details about this memory here. However, we are not sure whether Nvidia will use an exact 1800MHz clock but should be close to this number."

    *gapes* wow, incredible specs.
I wonder what yields on it will be, assuming this information is true.

since the 256 MB is 500$, maybe it will be 550$-600$

yeah, if this is true ati's got a problem, they havent gotten their new cards out into shops yet, and now this might hit them hard

maybe they will have to bust out the r580 early, but that way the entire 520 is gonna be nothing but a big loss

but those specs are amazing for sure, 550 mhz, wow

and as for yields, i assume NV has been planning this for a while, and saving up the best GPU's they got out of each wafer to put aside for a monster like this, so yields shouldnt be a problem

they can just make a bunch of G70's then put the bottom chips in GT's, the mid end clocking chips in GTX's and the top ones in this new card

im a bit sad though that NV decided that ultra is a bad name, i think this card deserves a name of its own, not GTX, and imho Ultra would be the right name for it

ULTRA for sure is a better name...

I really hope it is clocked @ 550/1800. If it is true then ATI has really hard time to make faster card.

I always thought Ultra was a bit of a naff name, reminds of superheroes in spandex. I think they should call it the GeForce 7800 Mutt's Nuts edition.

But if it's true, NVidia would take back the performance crown.

Still, 550/1800 sounds a little extreme. I might think 500/1500.

Holy crap. They used the new Samsung memory. And, considering Samsung was forced to lower prices (I do believe), nvidia could still manage to get it out at a decent price since they are using the same G70 chip....just with a tweaked pcb.

Damn, that is ATI's worst nightmare come true.

I just ordered an eVGA 7800GTX with ACS last night. Damn, I may need to refuse shipment :p

PS. If 550/1800 is true, I wonder how much more this tweaked pcb could handle. There is usually always some room for overclocking....though overclocking a beast like that would be stupid at best.

It's The Inq, so i don't take this seriously. It sounds very interesting, but we'll have to wait and see. ;)

Either way, Ati will come back with one hell of a card and not to mention the R580. Who knows what specs that chip will have. ;)

I cant imagine they're gonna jump to 1800 on the memory! I think brainxp got it right, maybe 1500 tops, but the 550 core is achieveable

I don't think it's because nV think ultra is a bad name, I just think they are holding the name back for a card that they have planned and are just waiting patiantly for the right time to unleash one beast that is truly special,
